Greetings Everyone! It is with great honor and excitement that I am able to
announce, albeit a little delayed, that one of our "Golden ARCHES" Peer
Health Educators was recently elected to be the Area Two (Arizona,
California, Nevada and Hawaii) Student Advisory Committee Representative for
The BACCHUS Network. This international network supports almost 1,000 peer
health education programs at over 900 campuses. She was elected at the
national BACCHUS General Assembly conference in Columbus, OH in November,
and her term will run until the same conference this November in Orlando,
FL. Please join me in congratulating Catherine Phan, ANGLE Co-Director, for
being the first UCR student elected to this position of leadership. She
attended the training retreat at The BACCHUS Network headquarters in Denver,
CO last month and her first regional newsletter is attached. We are very
proud of and excited for her and this outstanding achievement!

Hi Area 2,

Thank you so much for such a great year! I have learned so much from being
your Student Advisory Committee Representative and smile when I think of all
my Area 2 memories. You have kept me motivated and enthusiastic through your
dedication and passion for health education. Although I am leaving the Area
2 S.A.C. position I am not leaving BACCHUS Network's student leadership
team. At General Assembly this year I ran for the Student Trustee position
and was elected. I look forward to continuing to work for you. Please feel
free to send me an email at leah at bacchusnetwork.org, I hope to keep in
touch.

I know you are going to have a fabulous year with Catherine, your new
S.A.C. When I first met her at General Assembly I knew she would be an
outstanding S.A.C. and as I have gotten to know her through our training in
Denver my first instinct has been confirmed! She is a dedicated, friendly,
and knowledgeable peer educator. So I encourage you to send her an email to
get to know her better!

Thank you again,
Leah

473453594> Sexual Responsibility Week Outreach

by Cyndra Krogen-Morton

Area Consultant

Sacramento State has been conducting two days of
outreach for Sexual Responsibility Week and National
Condom Day for over eight years. The event was
originally coordinated by the Sexual Health Peer
Educators but was taken over by our Alcohol, Tobacco,
Other Drug and Sexual Assault Education Peer
Educators in 2006. It became a collaborative program
with Associated Students, Inc. (Sac State's Student
Government) Student Life and Services Center and
Sacramento County Department of Health and Human
Services in 2007. Outreach activities include The
Condom Challenge, which tests student's ability to
correctly put a condom on (a plastic banana) while
experiencing simulated intoxication; the Sexual Health
Wheel, which asks students questions about various
sexual health related topics such as lube, condoms,
contraception and alcohol and sex; guess the Lubes
in the Tube; and the distribution of thousands of safer
sex kits to the students of Sacramento State. The past
couple of years have also included the selling of
Condom Roses as a fundraiser for our Peer
Education Program as well as Sacramento State
Vagina Monologues promotion. This event continues
to be one of our more popular outreach events and we
look forward to helping students reduce their risk for
unplanned pregnancy and STDs every February! For
more information contact Cyndra Krogen-Morton at

One Universities' Approach to Body Image and Healthy Lifestyles Education
Through Peer Education

by Jenny Nirh and Angelo Ercia

University of Arizona

An issue facing students on many college campuses
is body image and the University of Arizona is not
immune to this issue. In the world of
juicycampus.com where fraternity and sorority
chapters and students are often categorized as being
the "hot" men/women or the "fat/ugly" men and women
or another site popcrunch.com exists solely to rank
the hottest schools in the country, it is no wonder that
students and even chapters can have issues in
regards to body image and self-esteem. This year
after learning that some of our chapters have
mandatory work out time during sorority recruitment
prep week we determined that we would need to start
education earlier and provide the students with more
body image and self-esteem education.

This year during sorority recruitment we instituted five
educational sessions. Normally the women have
breaks instead of recruitment events but the
Panhellenic Council and the Fraternity & Sorority
programs office determined those breaks could be
put to good use. The most successful of our
presentations, in cooperation with UA Social Justice
Programs, was a thirty minute body image, positive
self-esteem presentation. The presentation focused
on positive body image, the media's portrayal of
beauty, and information regarding eating disorders in
the US. The women left this session buzzing about
what they learned and when they were surveyed three
weeks later were able to still identify key information
they had been given.

We acknowledge that issues with body image are not
unique to our Panhellenic organizations, which is why
we have dedicated more time to educating the entire
fraternity & sorority community on these issues
through our peer health education program, which
began including men's education in Fall 2006.

The Hunter White Health Advocates of the Greek
community at the University of Arizona are a group of
students who are trained to provide advocacy, support,
and information regarding general health issues to
their peers. While the health advocates are trained on
various health topics such as alcohol use, sexual
health, and wellness, they also focus on nutrition,
eating disorders, steroid usage and exercise. To
ensure the Greek community stays healthy, the
advocates presented a nutrition program during fall
semester 2008 that focused on serving sizes, fad
diets, and myths and facts about dieting. In addition
they were provided with specific information to take to
their chapters in regards to steroid abuse. Each
health advocate is provided and trained on presenting
a PowerPoint presentation complete with activities
and processing questions. At the end of each
presentation the health advocates are required to
conduct an assessment. From this evaluation,
chapter members from fraternities and sororities
reported that they had learned to think more about
how they eat, to ask their cooks to cook healthier
meals at their chapter house, and drink more water.

In addition to the nutrition presentation, the health
advocates also promoted nutrition and provided
information on eating disorders during nutrition week
held from December 1-5, 2008. Each chapter's health
advocates encouraged their members to engage in
various activities on different days that helped them
eat nutritiously and think about healthy body image as
opposed to engaging in unhealthy diet or exercise
activities. For example on Monday, chapter members
were encouraged to end their meal with a healthy
desert. On Tuesday, they were encouraged to eat
breakfast and include fiber, carbohydrates, and
healthy fats. On Wednesday, health advocates
suggested their members watch a documentary or
movie with their brothers or sisters that focused on
nutrition such as "Super Size Me". This activity not only
helped fraternity and sorority members learn more
about the effects of eating poorly, but it also helped
strengthen their bond. On Thursday, health advocates
encouraged their members to go out and eat at a
healthy restaurant, while on Friday it was suggested
that members stay home and cook a nutritious meal
with their brothers or sisters.

To celebrate National Eating Disorder Week on
February 22- 28, 2009, health advocates and Campus
Health Services will team up for an event held on
February 22nd at the University of Arizona Mall
called "Love your body day" that will consist of
outreach and information distribution on eating
disorders. The documentary "America the Beautiful"
will also be shown during and will include a
discussion with the creator.

The FPS staff plans to continue to utilize our health
advocate program, recruitment events, and other
opportunities to ensure our fraternity men and sorority
women learn to eat nutritiously and practice healthy
behaviors. Their training and access to resources
allows the community to take an active role in
watching over their members and obtain the
necessary help they need when they observe
unhealthy habits.

Utilizing Your Leadership Team
by Leah Groppo and Katie Eggerman
Student Trustees

Just like you are a resource for credible health
information on your campus your Student Advisory
Committee Representative, also known as a S.A.C., is
resource for you in your affiliate role. All twelve S.A.C.'s
were trained in Denver mid January. During the
training they learned about their new role, The
BACCHUS Network organization, and created their
own SMART goals. SMART goals are specific,
measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.

Specific
The goal should be focused and target a detail within
the larger picture

Measurable
The goal should include a quantitative number that
evaluates improvement

Attainable
The goal should have an end result that can be
reached

Realistic
The goal should be practical; it should push you but
should be within your reach

Timely
The goal should include a deadline as to when you
want to achieve it

You should think about creating your own SMART
goals this quarter or semester and realize all you do! If
you have any questions email your S.A.C.
The S.A.C. is apart of your area team. Your area team
volunteers are there because they believe in the
importance of health education. They are comprised
of the Area Consultant, State Coordinators, and the
Student Advisory Committee Representative.
You don't need to have a question to send us an email
we would love to hear about your successful events,
unique parts of your program, or helpful tips to make
your experience more meaningful. If they cannot
answer your question then they can find an answer for
you. We look forward to a great year!
