that I am able to announce, albeit a little delayed, that one of our “Golden
ARCHES” Peer Health Educators was recently elected to be the Area Two
(Arizona, California, Nevada and Hawaii) Student Advisory Committee
Representative for The BACCHUS Network. This international network
supports almost 1,000 peer health education programs at over 900
campuses. She was elected at the national BACCHUS General Assembly
conference in Columbus, OH in November, and her term will run until the same
conference this November in Orlando, FL. Please join me in congratulating
Catherine Phan, ANGLE Co-Director, for being the first UCR student elected to
this position of leadership. She attended the training retreat at The
BACCHUS Network headquarters in Denver, CO last month and her first regional
newsletter is attached. We are very proud of and excited for her and this

The 2009 Area Two Spring Conference will be <b>Friday </b><br>

outreach for Sexual Responsibility Week and National <br>
Condom Day for over eight years. The event was <br>
originally coordinated by the Sexual Health Peer <br>
Educators but was taken over by our Alcohol, Tobacco, <br>
Other Drug and Sexual Assault Education Peer <br>
Educators in 2006. It became a collaborative program <br>
with Associated Students, Inc. (Sac State's Student <br>
Government) Student Life and Services Center and <br>
Sacramento County Department of Health and Human <br>
Services in 2007. Outreach activities include The <br>
Condom Challenge, which tests student's ability to <br>
correctly put a condom on (a plastic banana) while <br>
experiencing simulated intoxication; the Sexual Health <br>
Wheel, which asks students questions about various <br>
sexual health related topics such as lube, condoms, <br>
contraception and alcohol and sex; guess the Lubes <br>
in the Tube; and the distribution of thousands of safer <br>
sex kits to the students of Sacramento State. The past <br>
couple of years have also included the selling of <br>
Condom Roses as a fundraiser for our Peer <br>
Education Program as well as Sacramento State <br>
Vagina Monologues promotion. This event continues <br>
to be one of our more popular outreach events and we <br>
look forward to helping students reduce their risk for <br>
unplanned pregnancy and STDs every February! For <br>

is body image and the University of Arizona is not <br>
immune to this issue. In the world of <br>
juicycampus.com where fraternity and sorority <br>
chapters and students are often categorized as being <br>
the "hot" men/women or the "fat/ugly" men and
women <br>
or another site popcrunch.com exists solely to rank <br>
the hottest schools in the country, it is no wonder that <br>
students and even chapters can have issues in <br>
regards to body image and self-esteem. This year <br>
after learning that some of our chapters have <br>
mandatory work out time during sorority recruitment <br>
prep week we determined that we would need to start <br>
education earlier and provide the students with more <br>
body image and self-esteem education. </span><span
style='font-size:8.0pt;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif";
color:#4C3F36'><o:p></o:p></span></p>

educational sessions. Normally the women have <br>
breaks instead of recruitment events but the <br>
Panhellenic Council and the Fraternity & Sorority <br>
programs office determined those breaks could be <br>
put to good use. The most successful of our <br>
presentations, in cooperation with UA Social Justice <br>
Programs, was a thirty minute body image, positive <br>
self-esteem presentation. The presentation focused <br>
on positive body image, the media's portrayal of <br>
beauty, and information regarding eating disorders in <br>
the US. The women left this session buzzing about <br>
what they learned and when they were surveyed three <br>
weeks later were able to still identify key information <br>
they had been given. </span><span style='font-size:

color:#4C3F36'>The Hunter White Health Advocates of the Greek <br>
community at the University of Arizona are a group of <br>
students who are trained to provide advocacy, support, <br>
and information regarding general health issues to <br>
their peers. While the health advocates are trained on <br>
various health topics such as alcohol use, sexual <br>
health, and wellness, they also focus on nutrition, <br>
eating disorders, steroid usage and exercise. To <br>
ensure the Greek community stays healthy, the <br>
advocates presented a nutrition program during fall <br>
semester 2008 that focused on serving sizes, fad <br>
diets, and myths and facts about dieting. In addition <br>
they were provided with specific information to take to <br>
their chapters in regards to steroid abuse. Each <br>
health advocate is provided and trained on presenting <br>
a PowerPoint presentation complete with activities <br>
and processing questions. At the end of each <br>
presentation the health advocates are required to <br>
conduct an assessment. From this evaluation, <br>
chapter members from fraternities and sororities <br>
reported that they had learned to think more about <br>
how they eat, to ask their cooks to cook healthier <br>
meals at their chapter house, and drink more water. </span><span

color:#4C3F36'>In addition to the nutrition presentation, the
health <br>
advocates also promoted nutrition and provided <br>
information on eating disorders during nutrition week <br>
held from December 1-5, 2008. Each chapter's health <br>
advocates encouraged their members to engage in <br>
various activities on different days that helped them <br>
eat nutritiously and think about healthy body image as <br>
opposed to engaging in unhealthy diet or exercise <br>
activities. For example on Monday, chapter members <br>
were encouraged to end their meal with a healthy <br>
desert. On Tuesday, they were encouraged to eat <br>
breakfast and include fiber, carbohydrates, and <br>
healthy fats. On Wednesday, health advocates <br>
suggested their members watch a documentary or <br>
movie with their brothers or sisters that focused on <br>
nutrition such as "Super Size Me". This activity not only
<br>
helped fraternity and sorority members learn more <br>
about the effects of eating poorly, but it also helped <br>
strengthen their bond. On Thursday, health advocates <br>
encouraged their members to go out and eat at a <br>
healthy restaurant, while on Friday it was suggested <br>
that members stay home and cook a nutritious meal <br>
with their brothers or sisters. </span><span style='font-size:8.0pt;

outreach and information distribution on eating <br>
disorders. The documentary "America the Beautiful" <br>
will also be shown during and will include a <br>
discussion with the creator. </span><span style='font-size:
