[Vcsa-announcements] Reminder: Denim Day TOMORROW

Dear UCR Faculty and Staff,

            Wednesday, April 22, 2009 marks National Denim Day. UCR will be joining colleges and universities across the nation to recognize this important day. Denim Day is a national campaign to raise awareness and educate the public about rape and sexual assault. 

The history of Denim Day dates back to 1998 when an Italian Court overturned a rape conviction citing that the rape survivor wore jeans and therefore must have assisted her attacker in removing her pants. The court's decision sparked international outrage.  Wearing jeans became an international symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. On Denim Day, we unite against the sexual assault of girls, women, boys and men. We stand in support of survivors. We break the silence to end sexual violence.

            On Wednesday, April 22 2009 UCR staff, faculty and students are encouraged to wear denim. Information will be available regarding Denim Day at ASPB's "Nooner" program at the Bell Tower from 12-2pm. Additionally, there are several ways you can make Denim Day at UCR a success:

*       *Wear Denim as a visible sign of protest against myths that surround sexual assault on April 22!

*       *Pick up Denim Day materials at ASPB's nooner on April 22nd 

*       *Stop by the WRC and write messages on Denim (April 6-10)

*       *Explain the significance of Denim Day to your students and colleagues and encourage their participation. 

Denim Day is part of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. UCR is hosting, various programs throughout the month. Please join us!
