The UCR Emeriti (UCREA) and Retirees’ (UCRRA) Associations invites you to attend the upcoming Edward A. Dickson Emeritus/a Lecture Talk Series. Each year three retired UCR faculty are awarded Edward A. Dickson Professorships to support their research, teaching, or public service activities. In the year following their awards, Dickson Professors give public presentations of their work.
“Cosmopolitanism and the Middle Ages”
Presenter: Dickson awardee John M. Ganim | Date: Tuesday, March 4, 2025
Time: 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. | Location: In-person at University Extension Building 1101 in the University Village and Livestreamed via Zoom
Description
One of the most important ideas surrounding human rights, international relations and political responsibility has been the concept of cosmopolitanism. These discussions focus on the heritage of enlightenment thought, as the eighteenth century reconceived what it meant to be “a citizen of the world.” In this tradition, medieval concepts of the global and the other have been usually dismissed as one dimensional and xenophobic. This lecture describes some examples of cosmopolitan experience in medieval writings that complicate our present-day assumptions and concludes with some modern literary and visual imaginings of medieval cultural interactions.
