UCOP shared an update on Anthem's implementation of California Assembly Bill 2843 (Health Care Coverage: Rape and Sexual Assault), previously addressed in a communication issued on May 12, 2025.

Anthem has confirmed the benefits under AB 2843 have been fully implemented. These benefits remain effective and are retroactive to July 1, 2025.

The attached three Summary Plan Descriptions (SPDs) memorialize the zero ($0) member cost-share associated with this benefit for the first nine (9) months of treatment. The language below appears on the three SPDs; an example is on page 42 of the UC Care Summary Plan Description as follows:

Emergency Room. Benefits are provided for Medically Necessary services provided in the emergency room of a Hospital. We provide coverage for emergency room medical care and follow-up healthcare treatment for a Member who is treated following a rape or sexual assault without Cost Sharing for the first nine (9) months after the Member initiates treatment. Follow-up health care treatment includes medical or surgical services for the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of medical conditions arising from an instance of rape or sexual assault.

In addition, the Summary Plan Descriptions have been updated to clarify existing UC PPO plan policies concerning surrogacy. An example of the exclusion language is found on page 61 of the UC Care Summary Plan Description:

Surrogate Mother Services. For any services or supplies provided to a person, whether they are covered or not covered under the Plan, in connection with a surrogate pregnancy (including, but not limited to, the bearing of a child by another woman for an infertile couple).

If further updates arise that affect plan members, another communication will be issued.
