The new BCOE VPN authentication experience requires Highlanders to use Duo
MFA’s secure options.

Dear Highlander,

Following Information Technology Solutions’ security enhancement
<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/scotmemos/2026/05/04/new-campus-vpn-authentication-experience-starting-may>
on the campus Virtual Private Network (VPN), Highlanders are now required
to authenticate their VPN access using Duo MFA’s secure options. In other
words, Highlanders will no longer enter "1" to receive a simple push
notification for approval; they will need to use a secure method (e.g., a
3-digit code sent to their Duo app, touch ID, etc.).

Highlanders using the BCOE VPN (vpn.ucr.edu/bcoe) will be prompted to
verify their identity using Duo Universal Prompt, the same Duo multi-factor
authentication method(s) they use for other secure UCR resources such as
email.

Please note that all active VPN sessions were disconnected while ITS
performed the enhancement. As a result, all BCOE VPN users will need to
reauthenticate to maintain their VPN access. For step-by-step guidance on
reconnecting to the BCOE VPN, please refer to the IT knowledge article
<https://ucrsupport.service-now.com/ucr_portal?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0012445>
.

If you experience any VPN or network connectivity issues outside of the
maintenance window, please contact bcoesystems at ucr.edu to request IT
support.

Sincerely,
