Dear all,
I hope you had a lovely Spring Break!
This month I attended the *International Conference for the Fantastic in
the Arts*, in Orlando, March 18-22nd, and met with writers and publishers
to discuss special collections matters. Unfortunately, the airports were a
crush, so do take care if you're traveling anytime soon, and leave plenty
of time to get through security!
Just a couple of new acquisitions this month:
- about twenty back issues of *Rowrbrazzle*, which filled gaps in our
holdings
- *The Star Trek Guide* (1967), a second copy of this item, albeit with
additional materials such as schematic illustrations, character bios, and a
small zine collection.
Next month marks the centenary of Amazing Stories—the magazine that
arguably cemented the genre of English-language science fiction as we know
it today—and to commemorate it, I'm curating a *pop-up exhibit, 'A Century
of Amazing Stories*,' that will be installed on the *first floor of Rivera
Library* (turn left as you enter!) It features landmark issues of the
magazine, and will run from *April 6-26th*. I'm working with colleagues in
the Creat'R Lab
<https://library.ucr.edu/research-support/making-and-innovation/creatr-lab-makerspace>
to
put together a virtual version of the exhibit; more information on that in
next month's update.
Of course, don't forget to come up to Rivera's fourth floor and see the
current, permanent exhibit, '*Neon in the Gutters: Cyberpunk Visions of the
Future*,' and pick up some free comics from our reading library while
you're there.
That's all for this month. Take care!
Warmth and light,
Phoenix
*Recommended book of the month:* Christopher Caldwell, *Call and Response:
Stories of the Fantastic* (2025)
