Modeling the Assembly and Feedback of Supermassive Black Holes in Galaxy Formation Simulations

Yueing Ni

CfA, Harvard University

Abstract: In this talk, I will present an overview of the modeling of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in state of art galaxy formation simulations. The first part of the talk will show the cosmic evolution of black hole coalescence and assembly with the ASTRID simulation. With a large volume and high resolution, ASTRID is able to model the SMBH populations across a wide mass spectrum, ranging from the extreme >1e10Msun ultra-massive black holes to intermediate-mass black holes (IMBH, 1e4-1e6Msun). Through improved modeling of BH dynamics and coalescence, ASTRID consistently traces the trajectory and coalescence of MBHs following galaxy mergers and predicts a vast population of wandering IMBH as relics of hierarchical structure formation and tidal stripping of satellite galaxies. The large reservoir of IMBH binaries and IMBH-SMBH mergers predicted by ASTRID emerges as the primary sources of low-frequency gravitational waves that fall within the sensitivity range of LISA. The second part of the talk will focus on the pivotal role played by active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback in galaxy formation. Specifically, we will explore how AGN jet feedback interacts with the interstellar medium (ISM), driving turbulence and entraining galactic outflows. Detailed investigations of jet-ISM interaction will help us to gain insights into the mechanisms behind BH-galaxy coevolution.
