Dear all,

This is another reminder about the DYP/GRMP/UC-HSI fellowships. This is probably the last reminder I will send until Winter quarter starts.

In addition, you should be aware that the Graduate Writing Center is available to assist you with writing the diversity statements (which are now required for all fellowships). In fact, they can help you with any writing projects that you have including the research portion of the fellowships, a journal article, dissertation, or cover letter. Their website is: https://gwc.ucr.edu <https://gwc.ucr.edu/>. You would click on the “WCONLINE” button at the bottom to get into their system and make an appointment.

I hope you all have a happy and safe winter holiday, and may see you at the virtual party on Thursday.

>> This is a notice about the 2021-22 fellowships that are administered by the Graduate Division. There are three fellowships this year, and I would encourage you to apply to those that you are eligible for. Not only do these fellowships cover tuition and fees and supply funds for living expenses via a stipend, they are prestigious items to have on your CV. If you are not sure which to apply for, please consult with me or your research advisor.
>>
>> 1) Dissertation Year Program (DYP). The DYP awards are intended to provide support to Ph.D. candidates who are nearing completion of their dissertation research and expect to complete their dissertation within the academic year in which the award is granted. These are one quarter fellowships, but it is possible to award multiple quarters to the same student. Note that the fellowships do not cover non-resident tuition (NRT). These are awarded primarily on the basis of student research accomplishments and academic performance, but leadership, outreach activities, and contributions to improve diversity are also considered.
>>
>> 2) Graduate Research Mentorship Program (GRMP). The GRMP awards are intended to enhance the mentoring of doctoral students during their third, fourth, or fifth years of graduate study. This award targets both Ph.D. students who have advanced to candidacy and those who have not. The award requires US citizenship or permanent resident status, and strongly favors students who have demonstrably worked to enhance the diversity of the campus, department and its graduate program, have had to overcome obstacles in pursuing their degree, have demonstrated leadership, and/or have participated in outreach activities. These are also one quarter fellowships, but it is possible to award multiple quarters to the same student.
>>
>> 3) UC-HSI DDI program (UC Hispanic Serving Institutions Doctoral Diversity Initiative). This is a new full year fellowship that provides a $30K stipend and a $10K grant for professional development. These Pre-Professoriate Fellows must have received an undergraduate or Master's degree from a California HSI institution (go to https://www.ucop.edu/graduate-studies/_files/list-of-ca-hsis <https://www.ucop.edu/graduate-studies/_files/list-of-ca-hsis> for a list of eligible institutions), have advanced to candidacy before submitting the application and must have a demonstrated record of advancing issues of diversity, equity and inclusion. The goal of this program is to enhance faculty pathways for historically underrepresented groups. Note that international students are not eligible for the fellowship.
>>
>> The fillable pdf applications for all three fellowships are attached. Each contains information about the eligibility requirements, amount of support, required materials for submission, etc. The completed applications should be sent directly to me by January 11th, 2021 so that our Graduate Advisory Committee has time to consider them before submission of our recommendations to the Graduate Division. Please do not send applications directly to the Graduate Division, as they will not accept them.
>>
>> Thus, I would suggest that you get started on it soon, and work with your faculty advisor to make sure that your submission is competitive. Please write your research statement in a general manner so that it is understandable by people who are in disciplines other than physics, as part of the review process will be conducted by the Graduate Division. Also, you must obtain two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from your research advisor, and those also need be sent to me by the deadline.
