Health Scientist Administrator (Scientific Review Officer)
Division of Extramural Activities
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is seeking talented and motivated individuals to serve as Scientific Review Officers (SROs) in the Scientific Review Program (SRP) of the Division of Extramural Activities (DEA). SRP consists of four review branches: the AIDS Review Branch; Microbiology Review Branches A and B; and Immunology Review Branch, which manage the peer review of grant applications and contract proposals submitted in response to NIAID initiatives. These initiatives address Institute-specific needs and announce funding opportunities that may be awarded as a research project (R01, R21) or program project (P) grant, cooperative agreement (U), research career development award (K), institutional training grant (T), conference grant or cooperative agreement (R13, U13), or contract (N01). SRP staff participate in initiative development, help formulate and guide peer review strategies to meet new or unusual requirements, and collaborate closely with NIAID’s extramural program divisions and the DEA Office of the Director.

As the Designated Federal Official (DFO) in peer review, the SRO assesses submitted applications and proposals for compliance with funding opportunity announcement (FOA) instructions and HHS, NIH, and NIAID policies; identifies the areas of science represented and recruits, assigns, instructs, and oversees experts who evaluate and identify the most meritorious submissions; and completes summary statements and technical evaluation reports that represent the results of a scientific review meeting to program, acquisitions, and grants management stakeholders. NIAID SROs have broad expertise in infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, virology, bacteriology, parasitology and mycology and/or in immunology, allergy, and transplantation.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

The Scientific Review Program (SRP) in the Division of Extramural Activities (DEA) is seeking a dynamic, motivated individual with strong leadership skills to serve as chief of the Microbiology Review Branch-A (MRB-A). SRP staff participate in initiative development, work to help formulate and guide peer review strategies to meet new or unusual requirements—most recently to effectively review applications proposing development of vaccines and therapeutics to address COVID-19 and potential future pandemics—and collaborate closely with NIAID’s extramural program divisions and the DEA Office of the Director. MRB-A manages the review of initiatives sponsored by the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and is one of four branches in SRP that include a second Microbiology Review Branch, an AIDS Review Branch, and an Immunology Review Branch, the latter of which manage the review of initiatives sponsored by the Division of AIDS and the Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation, respectively. The branch chief oversees up to 18 staff members that include the deputy chief, scientific review officers, and multiple review specialists and serves on an 11-person SRP management team alongside branch and deputy chiefs from the other SRP branches.
