Held in conjunction with the 34th Annual Festival Flamenco Alburquerque, the New Perspectives in Flamenco History and Research Symposium is a biennial gathering of theorists, historians, practitioners, artists, patrons, and members of the public. The Symposium provides a unique opportunity to examine various aspects of the art form of flamenco. The purpose of this conference is to supplement traditional means of education with fresh ideas in the ever-evolving world of flamenco arts. Faculty, staff and students of higher education, researchers, K-12 educators, community leaders, administrators, non-profit partners, government agencies, and other professionals are invited to participate. Please note that the 2021 New Perspectives in Flamenco History and Research Symposium will be presented as a free-to-the-public event in a hybrid model, both in person in Albuquerque, New Mexico and online.

CONFERENCE THEME

The global pandemic has amplified long-existing issues of historical trauma, violence, oppression, and racism. Art does not exist in a vacuum. Given the global upheaval and social uprising we have all witnessed, what is our role as practitioners, scholars, and educators of flamenco? What is the power of flamenco to address complex societal issues? What does it mean to study and make flamenco during times of strife?

The 2021 conference theme is “Where do we go from here? Flamenco in the Early 21st Century.” We seek to facilitate discourse surrounding race, inequality and inequity, people’s movements, and social issues addressed in and throughout the history, educational, and presentation of flamenco. Participants are encouraged to question what it means for diasporic peoples to practice this art form in the 21st century.

PROPOSALS

We welcome submissions from practitioners and researchers who examine the relationship of their work and scholarship to social inequalities, building an anti-racist praxis, or historicizing current events. We seek proposals that are informative and relevant to the field of flamenco, supported by theory, practice, and/or research. Topics may relate to flamenco history as well as to contemporary flamenco. Presentations may be made in English or Spanish per presenter preference. An English translator will be provided for Spanish-speaking presenters.

GUIDELINES FOR PROPOSALS Proposals may include any of the presentation formats listed below. Only one presentation per applicant is permissible. It is essential that proposals address the theme of the conference and present new insights in the attempt to advance flamenco research knowledge and practice.

Formats for submission include:

1. Academic-based and/or Practice-based Research Presentation: These presentations will be programmed for the duration of 15 minutes, including any audio-visual material. A five (5) minute discussion period will be allotted after each presentation. We encourage conference attendees and presenters to continue conversations beyond the conference.

2. Panel: A panel presentation consisting of three or four presenters is also welcome. Panels are coordinated by one of the panelists to address a particular topic at the conference. The panel is assessed as a whole and will be allotted one hour in the program, including discussion. Please note: For a panel proposal to be considered complete, all panelists must be listed on the submission form.

3. Lecture-Demonstration: Lecture-demonstrations relating to the theme of the conference are welcome. These will be programmed for the duration of 45 minutes, which includes a 15-minute discussion.

Organizada en conjunto con el trigésimo cuarto Festival Anual Flamenco Alburquerque, Nuevas Perspectivas en la Historia del Flamenco y Simposio de Investigación es un acontecimiento bienal que reúne a académicos, historiadores, intérpretes, artistas, empresas y aficionados, cada uno aportando una oportunidad única para tratar diversos aspectos del género flamenco. El propósito de esta conferencia es complementar los medios tradicionales de educación con ideas frescas en el mundo de las artes flamencas en constante evolución. Invitamos a profesores, trabajadores y alumnos del ámbito de la enseñanza superior, investigadores, docentes K-12, líderes comunitarios, administradores, asociaciones sin fines de lucro, agencias gubernamentales y otros profesionales a participar en Nuevas Perspectivas en la Historia del Flamenco y Simposio de Investigación. Recuerde que el Simposio de 2021 sobre Nuevas Perspectivas en la Historia e Investigación del Flamenco se presentará como un evento gratuito para el público en un modelo híbrido, tanto en persona en Albuquerque, Nuevo México, como en línea.

TEMA DE LA CONFERENCIA

La pandemia mundial ha amplificado problemas de trauma histórico, violencia, opresión y racismo que existen desde hace tiempo. El arte no existe en el vacío. Teniendo en cuenta la convulsión mundial y el resurgimiento social del que todos hemos sido testigos, ¿cuál es nuestro papel como practicantes, académicos y educadores del flamenco? ¿Cuál es el poder del flamenco para abordar cuestiones sociales complejas? ¿Qué significa estudiar y hacer flamenco en periodos de contienda?

El tema de la conferencia de 2021 es "¿Hacia dónde vamos? El flamenco a principios del siglo XXI". Buscamos facilitar el discurso en torno a la raza, la desigualdad y la falta de igualdad, los movimientos populares y las cuestiones sociales que se abordan en y a través de la historia, la educación y la presentación del flamenco. Se propone a los participantes que se cuestionen lo que significa para los pueblos de la diáspora practicar este arte en el siglo XXI.

PROPUESTAS

Son bienvenidas las propuestas de profesionales e investigadores que examinen la relación de su trabajo y su formación con las desigualdades sociales, la construcción de una postura antirracista o la interpretación histórica de los acontecimientos actuales. Buscamos propuestas que sean informativas y relevantes para el campo del flamenco, respaldadas por la teoría, la práctica y/o la investigación. Los temas pueden estar relacionados con la historia del flamenco, así como con el flamenco contemporáneo. Las presentaciones pueden hacerse en inglés o en español, según la preferencia del presentador. Se proporcionará un traductor de inglés para los presentadores de habla hispana.

BASES PARA LAS PROPUESTAS Las propuestas incluyen cualquiera de los formatos de presentación descritos a continuación. Sólo se admite una presentación por candidato. Es imprescindible que las propuestas se ajusten al tema de la conferencia, y presenten nuevas indagaciones para avanzar los conocimientos y práctica de la investigación del flamenco.

Los formatos de presentación incluye:

1. Presentación Basada en Estudios o Investigación: Estas presentaciones estarán programadas para una duración de 15 minutos, incluyendo cualquier material audiovisual. Al final de cada presentación, habrá un período de 5 minutos para dialogar.

2. Grupo: La presentación en grupo, con tres o cuatro presentadores, también se admite. Los grupos serán coordinados por uno de los miembros para tratar un tema en concreto. El grupo se valora en conjunto, y se les permitirá una hora de tiempo en el programa, incluyendo coloquio. Se ruega tomen nota: Para que una propuesta en grupo se considere completa, todos los miembros del grupo deben figurar en el formulario de inscripción.

3. Charla ilustrada: Se admiten charlas ilustradas relacionadas con el tema de la conferencia. Estarán programadas para una duración de 45 minutos, que incluye un coloquio de 15 minutos.
