Please join UC Center Sacramento remotely for these exciting talks: “Curriculum Reforms and Intergenerational Health”, “With Deliberate Intentions: COVID-19 & Reopening Schools for Black Students” and “Friendships, Identity, and Well-being Among Diverse California Youth and Implications for Life After the COVID-19 Pandemic.”



Join UC Center Sacramento remotely on Wednesday, October 27th from 12:00pm - 1:00pm for a talk with Dr. Ozkan Eren, Associate Professor of Economics at UC Riverside, on “Curriculum Reforms and Intergenerational Health.” This talk will analyze the relationship between intergenerational transmission of education and infant health (measured by birth weight and gestational age). The results suggest that curriculum reforms significantly reduced the incidence of low birth weight and prematurity for black mothers. The total social gain induced by favorable infant health outcomes can be more than two billion dollars. Johnson, National Science Foundation Project Director at UCLA, on “With Deliberate Intentions: COVID-19 & Reopening Schools for Black Students.” Dr. Johnson will provide an in-depth exploration and discussion of the district level health, educational, and social emotional data findings from the Beyond The Schoolhouse: Digging Deeper: Prioritizing Black Student Wellness & Opportunity for Reopening Schools Report (April 2021) along with in-school and out-of-school policy recommendations that must be prioritized as schools reopen in Los Angeles County. Join UC Center Sacramento remotely on Wednesday, November 17th from 12:00pm - 1:00pm for a talk with Dr. Phillip Hammack, Professor and Chair of Psychology at UC Santa Cruz and Dr. Adrienne Nishina, Professor of Human Ecology at UC Davis, on “Friendships, Identity, and Well-being Among Diverse California Youth and Implications for Life After the COVID-19 Pandemic.” Dr. Phillip Hammack will discuss the processes of identity development for sexual and gender diverse teens living in coastal, more urban versus central, more rural parts of northern California, and the implications for social policy to support adolescent health and well-being. Dr. Adrienne Nishina will present her research on the benefits of ethnic and racial diversity in schools and neighborhoods, and the implications of the remote-schooling, stay-at-home guidelines and other consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic for adolescents’ social, academic and professional development.
