Hello everyone,
This is a gentle reminder that our next Geospatial/GIS meetup will be
held *next
week*, on *Tuesday **January 20*, from 12:00 - 12:50 pm.
https://ucr.zoom.us/j/95462301391?pwd=2uXZuBCRHjloR8r6HSBc3qvMO9A32h.1
Meeting ID: 954 6230 1391
Passcode: 440345
Announcements to start the meetup will include resources related to the
sunsetting of Classic Story Maps, and disclosure of which local city made
WalletHub's top 10 list of Least Fun Cities in the US.
At this meetup, Ph.D. candidate Ryan Bruellman will present *More Than You
Bargained for: Dollar Store Influences on One's Food Environment.*
Access to fresh, healthy food is crucial for individuals to have a healthy
diet and offset aging-related diseases. Supermarkets and traditional
grocery stores serve as a major food source and access to these stores is a
major consideration for designation of a “food desert” by the United States
Department of Agriculture. Areas designated as “food swamps”, on the other
hand are areas with high concentrations of fast food and convenience store
locations relative to traditional grocery stores. Despite rising grocery
costs, dollar stores are often overlooked as a grocery source. This talk
will demonstrate the importance of considering dollar store access impact
on health and emphasize dollar store relevancy to health policy on both a
local, Southern California level as well as a national level.
*Ryan is a 5th and final year Ph.D. candidate in Genetics, Genomics &
Bioinformatics at UCR, co-mentored by Dr. Chandra Reynolds and Dr. Ilana
Bennett. His research focuses on how modifiable behaviors (e.g., prolonged
sitting, physical activity, diet) influence early aging-related health, and
how genetic and the environmental factors interact with these behaviors.*
Registering for the meetup is appreciated but not required. If you haven't
already done so, you may register through Eventbrite
<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/geospatialgis-meetups-tickets-1978477579700>,
or respond to the calendar invitation many of you received on January 6.
After the meetup, notes and a link to the recording will be shared.
Feel free to forward this email, especially to anyone who may be interested
in the presentation topic.
I hope you’ll have a good holiday weekend, and that you can join us on
Tuesday!
Best,
*Janet Reyes*
