Hi All.

The Sweeney Art Gallery has two events this week of interest to
African-American studies and Latin America/Colonialism.

On Thursday, March 6th, we are having a panel discussion based on our
exhibition of Mark Steven Greenfield's work titled Incognegro:

His multimedia photographs, paintings and sculptures offer a contemporary
critique of race through the exploration of one of America's infamously
controversial forms of entertainment: Black-face performance.

Here is the description of the panel and film screening:

Panel Discussion
6 PM

The Sweeney Art Gallery hosts a panel discussion on the history of artists
who have appropriated traumatic imagery from stereotyped images of
African-Americans in their work and the conflicted responses their work has
received from the public. Panelists include artist Mark Steven Greenfield,
UCR Assistant Professor of English Vorris Nunley, Ph.D., and Sweeney
Assistant Director Shane Shukis, Ph.D. in American and African-American
literature.

Film Screening
7PM

With the permission of Spike Lee¹s 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, the
Sweeney Art Gallery will screen the 2000 film Bamboozled about a modern
televised minstrel show featuring black actors donning blackface makeup that
unintentionally becomes a national hit.

On Friday, March 7th, we are organizing an international Symposium on Art
and Cuba titled: "Art from the Island Nation: Transnational Cuba and the
Myth of Isolation." See this address for times and details:
