dirtcakes literary magazine, in conjunction with Chapman University's series of Poetry Week events in April, is sponsoring a relief poetry contest, all the proceeds from which will be donated to survivors on St. Lucia, a small caribbean island battered by Hurricane Thomas. The theme for this special event contest is the small, the individual, the overlooked. Because of the spontaneous origin of the contest, the deadline is soon--March 21.

The winning poem(s) will be read aloud by Lynn Thompson (Beg No Pardon, Perugia Press) at a fundraising event April 5. Please visit our website for more information on the contest and submitting to the magazine in general: www.dirtcakes.wordpress.com.

And if you are not the poetry type, please consider sending other appropriate work for future issues. At this time, we do publish just poetry, non-fiction, and visual art; non-fiction has to date been more needed than poetry. We consider multiple forms--literary journalism, personal essay, articulate diatribe--and look forward to expanding this aspect of the magazine. The theme for our next issue, slated for later in the year, is "Girls will be Women," dedicated to UN Millennium Goal #3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women.

Thanks for considering dirtcakes.
