Dream Street and the Inland Empire’s Ruthless Homebuilding Industry
Tuesday, Oct 6 at 1-2:30pm
Humanities & Social Sciences Building 1500
Douglas McCulloh, photographer and author of Dream Street
Mike Davis (Creative Writing, UCR)
Workers from the LIUNA Homebuilding Campaign
Douglas McCulloh, Mike Davis discuss McCulloh’s new book and the
issues raised by it. Dream Street documents the development of Dream
Street, a subdivision in Ontario, California. McCulloh haunted Dream
Street with his camera and interviewed the builders, workers, and
prospective homebuyers to chronicle the evolution of this new
neighborhood. McCulloh’s work focuses on the construction workers
and the first-time buyers struggling to purchase a piece of the
California dream. Many of the hopeful buyers who visit Dream Street
are turned down for loans as well, and by mid-2008, more than 200
houses in the surrounding area faced foreclosure.
"Dream Street is a disturbing yet moving portrait of lives indentured
to that ruthless outdoor sweatshop known as the home construction
industry. McCulloh confronts us with the exploitation and downward
mobility that manufactures the mirage of suburban affluence." —Mike
Davis, author of City of Quartz
Douglas McCulloh is an artist, writer, educator, and curator who pays
close attention to the workings of chance. He holds an MFA in
photography and digital media from Claremont Graduate University and
his photography has been exhibited widely in the United States,
Europe, China, and Mexico. Mike Davis (Creative Writing, UCR) was
named a McArthur Fellow in 1998 and is author of more than 20 books,
including Prisoners of the American Dream. He is currently doing
research on surburban development.
This event is funded by the UC Miguel Contreras Labor Studies
Development Fund and an Office of Instructional Development
Instructional Innovation and Excellence Grant. Co-sponsored by the
UCR Art Department, Creative Writing Department, Edward J. Blakely
Center for Sustainable Suburban Development, Labor Studies, Media and
