Meeting the Region's Growing Need for Child Care

The need for quality child care in the Inland area is the focus of the Sept. 18 Randall Lewis Seminar.

Seminar speakers will be Deborah Clark-Crews, Executive Director with the Riverside County Child Care Consortium; and Kristi Van Heule, Coordinator for First 5 Riverside's Capacity Building Initiative, which focuses on increasing child care facilities development in Riverside County.

The availability of child care has not kept pace with the Inland region's rapid population growth. In Riverside County, for example, there has been a 20 percent increase in the birth-through- age-five population in the past five years, creating a significant gap in the number of licensed child care spaces.

Meeting the need for child care is multifaceted and complex. Without access to child care, parents cannot work, impacting the financial health of the region's households and its communities. With child care, parents can go to work, workplace absenteeism is reduced, and children do better later in school and later in life.

Ms. Clark-Crews will be addressing the current child care crisis in Riverside County. She will share what is being done to tackle the critical shortage of quality, affordable child care throughout the county; and possibilities for the future. She has been part of the Early Care and Child Development field for more than 30 years. Before joining the Consortium in 2005, she served for more than 20 years in various positions with the Riverside County Office of Education. She also has held administrative positions with for-profit centers and state-funded programs. She earned a MA in Education from Chapman University, a BA in Business Management from the University of Redlands.

Ms. Van Heule will address the need for child care, the role of First 5 Riverside in ameliorating the shortcomings, the cost-benefit of child care and the impact of economics as related to child care. She has been in the Early Childhood Education field for 16 years as a teacher, site supervisor, and curriculum coach and program specialist. She received a BA in Child Development at Cal State University, Fullerton in 1992, and her Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from Cal Baptist University in 1999.

The seminar will begin at 5:30 p.m. at University Village, Chancellor's Conference Room (UV207). See map.

The seminars are free of charge.
