Subject: Position open--Associate Director, Recovery Ecology, San Diego Zoo Global (Southwest U.S)
Date: November 16, 2020 at 6:33:48 PM PST

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Please see the following job opening. It is a “dream job” with permanent funding for anyone interested in species conservation in the southwestern U.S., particularly for birds and reptiles. Positions like this don’t come around often.

I am casting the net wide, hoping that you will know someone who is a good fit. Please distribute widely to colleagues who may have an interest in this position: forward this email, tweet it out, post it on FB.

The position is to help me run the department and spearhead our conservation science work with burrowing owls, desert tortoise, and (in the future) other priority species, primarily in the SW US. It is intended as a mid-career opportunity.

Details on the position and application procedures can be found here<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fus59.dayforcehcm.com%2FCandidatePortal%2Fen-US%2Fsdzg%2FPosting%2FView%2F2315&data=04%7C01%7CNicholas.Peterson%40wildlife.ca.gov%7C854864892414439b912b08d88b14c8d7%7C4b633c25efbf40069f1507442ba7aa0b%7C0%7C0%7C637412268666686531%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=lnjmF7dr6yvWSPjobsoha2OTVLn5PGMEmeiUkuKvQ3U%3D&reserved=0>.

With warm wishes,

Ron

The tortoise program is conducted in the Mojave Desert and focuses on enhancing understanding of ecological factors influencing population persistence and anthropogenic factors contributing to population decline and designing strategies to improve management. Head-starting and translocation are important tools used to achieve these goals. Similarly, the burrowing owl program incorporates monitoring, adaptive management, habitat enhancement, translocation and other approaches to aid in the recovery of the species. All projects are conducted in close collaboration with an inter-disciplinary team comprised of animal care specialists, geneticists, pathologists, veterinary services, educators, behavioral, population and spatial ecologists, as well as a diversity of external public and private stakeholders.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
The successful candidate will have a strong background in field ecological research and conservation management, will hold a Ph.D. in animal ecology, conservation biology, or related field, or may possess and MSc degree in one of these disciplines if the candidate also has extensive experience (> 5 years) managing conservation programs.
