<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The primary responsibility of the open Associate Director position will be to supervise conservation programs in Southern California,
specifically supervising at least two long-term priority programs for burrowing owls and desert tortoises. The successful candidate will oversee these programs and may develop new programs or contribute to others as opportunities arise. The tortoise program
is conducted in the Mojave Desert and focuses on enhancing understanding of ecological factors influencing population persistence and anthropogenic factors contributing to population decline and designing strategies to improve management. Head-starting and
translocation are important tools used to achieve these goals. Similarly, the burrowing owl program incorporates monitoring, adaptive management, habitat enhancement, translocation and other approaches to aid in the recovery of the species. All projects are
conducted in close collaboration with an inter-disciplinary team comprised of animal care specialists, geneticists, pathologists, veterinary services, educators, behavioral, population and spatial ecologists, as well as a diversity of external public and private
stakeholders. </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto"><b><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?</span></b><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The successful candidate will have a strong background in field ecological research and conservation management, will hold a Ph.D. in
animal ecology, conservation biology, or related field, or may possess and MSc degree in one of these disciplines if the candidate also has extensive experience (> 5 years) managing conservation programs. The successful candidate will also have significant
experience managing multiple conservation projects, including financial, legal and human resource aspects. In addition, preferred candidates will use an inter-disciplinary approach to conservation research, demonstrate fluency in current technologies available
for studying animal ecology, will have strong quantitative and analytical skills, and will have a proven track record for publishing in peer-reviewed journals and securing and managing grant funding. Preferred candidates will also have familiarity with the
regulatory and legal frameworks of conservation and have proven abilities to build and maintain collaborative partnerships.
