Hi Patty,

Could you please share this message with the plant biology graduate students? We are trying to get a good interdisciplinary group for our upcoming seminar class. The topic this time around may be of interest to students in the program.

The info is below. Thanks!

Subject: Seminar of interest: ENTM 252 - influence of the insect microbiome on behavior

Message:

Dear Students,

This Spring, I will be teaching ENTM 252, a 2-unit seminar in insect behavior with Dr. Jocelyn Millar. Our topic for this quarter is “How (and why) does the insect microbiome affect behavior?” You are receiving this message because this topic may be of interest to students in related disciplines outside of Entomology. In the class we will explore the connections among the insect brain and the range of microbes living on, or in, insect hosts. Students will choose a narrow topic for an in-depth literature synthesis, culminating in a presentation and written summary. Any topic dealing with the connection between the insect microbiome and behavior is fair game. We expect some vibrant discussions (and debates) on this rapidly advancing research area. Throughout the course, students will also gain experience in reviewing manuscripts and training in best practices for communicating science through oral and written formats.

Towards the beginning of the quarter, we will have an organizational meeting, at which we will get all the logistical details sorted out. Class will be held Fridays at 10am-11:50am in Entomology 161.

If you are interested in taking the course please email us so we can help you get enrolled (kerry.mauck at ucr.edu<mailto:kerry.mauck at ucr.edu>, millar at ucr.edu<mailto:millar at ucr.edu>).

Thanks,
Kerry Mauck
