Job Description
and Specifications
Postdoctoral
Research Scientist – high resolution spatial modeling
General
Summary
This 2-year postdoctoral research position is created with
funding from the US Department of Energy to collect and model high-resolution
spatial data of threatened avian species in regions of high potential wind
development. Our interdisciplinary research team is currently collecting and
analyzing unique high-frequency GPS telemetry data on movement ecology of
golden eagles migrating through the central Appalachian region. We are
producing large-scale models of eagle movement in the context of wind and
topography and modeling local-scale movements of eagles in response to these
same parameters. Our initial work will generate first-cut probabilistic maps
showing relative risk to eagles of development of wind energy in the central Appalachians region. This position is created to further
this work, by advancing the current models, by holistically integrating the
large- and local-scale models of eagle movements, and by extending these models
to include data collected on movements of other local migratory birds of prey.
The ideal candidate for this position will have
extensive spatial modeling and programming skills and experiences, as well as a
strong background in statistics and mathematics. A Ph.D. is required for this
position; applicants who have not yet completed their degree should indicate
their expected date of completion. The successful candidate should show a
strong record of publication, the ability to conduct research independently and
the capacity to function as a collaborator on a diverse research team.
Position
Objectives
·
Create spatially explicit empirically-based
models that describe movement patterns of golden eagles and other birds of
prey, through the central Appalachian region. Models should incorporate
meteorology and topography and be useful in predicting relative risk to
migratory birds from development of wind energy.
·
Publish, on a regular basis, the
results of these modeling exercises. On average at least two publications per
year are expected from this research.
·
Function as a collaborator and
team member to a vibrant interdisciplinary migratory raptor and wind energy
research team.
Qualifications
·
PhD required in a quantitative
field such as statistics, mathematics, landscape ecology, mathematical biology
or related study area. Degrees or evidence of experience in ecology, 3D spatial
modeling, movement ecology, bird flight dynamics, or related field is important
to this position.
·
Background programming in C, R,
perl, python and/or other modern languages.
·
Experience working with large
databases, especially related to weather and GIS data, such as the NCEP North
American Regional Reanalysis (NARR).
·
Must have the ability to
communicate effectively - verbally and in writing - in English in public and in
professional settings.
·
Must be able to function as a team
member, within the National Aviary and with outside organizations.
·
Excellent organizational skills.
·
Must have experience planning and
conducting research projects and working with a diversity of researchers,
academic and non-academic.
Applicants
should send a cover letter, cv, copies of publications, and the names and
contact information for three references. Applications and inquiries can be
sent to: Todd Katzner, Director of Conservation and Field Research, National
Aviary, 700 Arch St.,
Allegheny Commons West, Pittsburgh,
PA 15212,
todd.katzner at aviary.org.
