About Now_areawide_ipm_program | |
Navel orangeworm (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae: Amyelois transitella) (NOW) is the primary pest of pistachios in California. Infestation by NOW not only reduces crop yield and quality, but is also associated with aflatoxin, a known human carcinogen heavily regulated in key markets. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices for NOW include winter sanitation, mating disruption, monitoring, and well-timed pesticide sprays. The high dispersal capacity of NOW allows it to move between orchards, and so the efficacy of local management efforts can easily be undermined by NOW colonization from poorly managed nearby orchards. As such, areawide IPM is needed for NOW. We are currently developing, organizing, and coordinating an areawide IPM program for NOW in West Fresno County that will leverage new technologies and policy incentives to facilitate grower participation.
