[WFA*] Senate Elections: Get Out and Vote

Dear all,

I’d like to contribute from my own memory and experience as Senate Secretary-Parliamentarian during part of Dylan Rodriguez’s terms as Senate Chair.

Dylan revitalized the Senate as a forum not only for faculty but also for students and staff. He assigned a theme, e.g. “Food Insecurity,” to each Division meeting and then invited a range of experts and perspectives to speak to the theme. Attendance at Division meetings shot up and became relevant to the whole campus. The increased interest and engagement with the principles of faculty governance and, more broadly, democratic governance were palpable.

What’s much more hidden from view, though, is how respectful of and professional with the Senate staff Dylan was. He treated the staff not only as colleagues but as consultants and experts. The Senate staff blossomed in terms of their morale and confidence; and their communication with and delivery of information to the faculty improved significantly. The faculty benefited greatly from the staff’s increased capacity to share knowledge and recommendations, especially by those with long institutional memory. I had never seen such an equitable and productive kind of exchange and coordination between faculty and staff. Frankly, until Dylan’s term as Senate Chair, I had not thought such synergy possible. Moreover, Dylan steadily boosted the confidence of the faculty on executive council and sharpened our ability to analyze and set policy on our campus and systemwide.

I hope this is helpful.

Best,

Sarita See

It would be a shame if the two women candidates lost because the women faculty split their votes and the men all voted for Dylan, so I was hesitant to reach out to WFA members. Dylan's leadership is not helpful for the average female professor at UCR, as he is not at all interested in prioritizing issues that are the most important to members of our group. Dylan is keen to get involved in every topic, no matter how inconsequential, and to assign tasks related to them to many committees. In addition, he duplicates the work by creating ad hoc committees for issues that should be dealt with by standing committees.

When Dylan was chair it meant a tremendous amount of service for WFA members. It likely is one factor explaining the low percentage of female full professors at UCR.

Through the Senate, we can voice our concerns and agenda; it might not necessarily be a unified voice, but a voice present at the table.

> As Chair, I will lead the Academic Senate to exercise our rightful authority as the sole judge over all matters of our academic mission. Our mission has been encumbered by challenges, most recently the pandemic. The pandemic, however, only exacerbated what has threatened our academic mission for decades. As UCR plans to continue growing, to 35,000 students in less than 15 years, while the budget relies more on student tuition and increased enrollment, asking faculty to do more with less, our Senate needs to ensure that faculty be an integral part of the projected growth, both in numbers and in power. The Senate should ensure that the online mode of instruction, while promising in many ways, is not an easy solution to teaching more students with fewer faculty.
>
> The Senate Chair represents the views of the faculty to the campus administration and the UC system, to be heard and considered by the administration in all matters in running the University. Inviting all voices to the table, therefore, is a critical responsibility of the Chair. I believe that the relationship between the senate and the administration is built upon mutual respect, in a collaborative, rather than an antagonistic, relationship. I have a long history of administrative experiences as Department Chair, Associate Dean of Student Academic Affairs, and Associate Dean of Social Sciences, working with the administration and the senate, across the college and the campus, in matters of budget, student admissions, courses, and academic personnel. By listening more, and speaking less, I will build consensus through transparency and open dialogue, while streamlining senate operations to reduce ineffective redundancies. Under my leadership, we will get things done to uphold our academic mission, and to be a clear and loud voice in all matters, as we stand at this critical juncture.
