Dear Members of WFA,

I am a Professor in Anthropology, a past co-chair of WFA, and a current candidate for the Senate Chair position. I write today to ask you to get involved in the ongoing Senate Elections: Get out and vote! I have appended two calls, one for the Division and another for CHASS.

Of course I would ask you for your vote, but more importantly, I think it is critical that WFA members get involved in university operations as much as possible, including the Senate. Through the Senate, we can voice our concerns and agenda; it might not necessarily be a unified voice, but a voice present at the table.

I would also like to point out that it has been many terms since we had a woman chair at the Senate. It’s time.

Here’s my candidate statement, if you are considering voting for me:
As Chair, I will lead the Academic Senate to exercise our rightful authority as the sole judge over all matters of our academic mission. Our mission has been encumbered by challenges, most recently the pandemic. The pandemic, however, only exacerbated what has threatened our academic mission for decades. As UCR plans to continue growing, to 35,000 students in less than 15 years, while the budget relies more on student tuition and increased enrollment, asking faculty to do more with less, our Senate needs to ensure that faculty be an integral part of the projected growth, both in numbers and in power. The Senate should ensure that the online mode of instruction, while promising in many ways, is not an easy solution to teaching more students with fewer faculty.

The Senate Chair represents the views of the faculty to the campus administration and the UC system, to be heard and considered by the administration in all matters in running the University. Inviting all voices to the table, therefore, is a critical responsibility of the Chair. I believe that the relationship between the senate and the administration is built upon mutual respect, in a collaborative, rather than an antagonistic, relationship. I have a long history of administrative experiences as Department Chair, Associate Dean of Student Academic Affairs, and Associate Dean of Social Sciences, working with the administration and the senate, across the college and the campus, in matters of budget, student admissions, courses, and academic personnel. By listening more, and speaking less, I will build consensus through transparency and open dialogue, while streamlining senate operations to reduce ineffective redundancies. Under my leadership, we will get things done to uphold our academic mission, and to be a clear and loud voice in all matters, as we stand at this critical juncture.
The voting closes at 5 pm this Friday, April 8, 2022; but rather than waiting to do it later, you can vote right now at: https://senate.ucr.edu/rsenate/elections
Hope you vote early and often,

Sang-Hee
