Dear VCSA staff,

We are starting Fall 2012 with the awesome news that UCR has been named a Top 25 LGBT-Friendly Campus in the nation and a Top 10 Transgender-Friendly Campus. Much of this is due to the inclusive programs across our division. Check out the attached qualitative study of BPFQ students at "Western University" for proof.

We hope to see many of y'all at our Open House. Please also consider registering for an Allies Seminar.

If you wish to be added to our weekly Friday Update email, please reply to this message.

Best, Nancy Jean, Toi, and Mark

For many, finding a good friend is difficult-what do you say to strike up conversation, how do you redefine community to incoporate a diverse group of friends, and what can you do to ensure that the friendship is maintained? This interactive "speed friending" seminar provides you with the social network, strategies. and practice necessary to connect with others, and perhaps even develop that special friendship that you've been looking for.

Listening To Frank Ocean: A Conversation with Ernest Hardy
An Event of Q-Lab
Thursday, October 11, 2012, noon to 1:30pm @ Humanities 2212 (English Dept Conference Rm)
A conversation with Ernest Hardy about music, intimacy, race & sex. We will take our cues from Frank Ocean’s Tumblr post (“Thank You’s”) in which he framed his latest album (Orange) within a story of unrequited same-sex love. Join us as we listen to Orange and as Hardy leads us in a discussion of music & queer expression. Ernest Hardy is an important voice in music criticism - he is a fantastic model for anyone thinking about developing a queer critical writing practice. He is always right there with a distinctive anti-racist, feminist and queer-positive perspective - his writing is animated by a love for the sound and a feel for the deep politics.

Listening to Frank Ocean is the first event at UCR to be sponsored by Queer Lab. Queer Lab is funded by the Dean of the College for Humanities, Arts and Social Science. It is a three-year project fostering queer research at UCR, and is directed by English Professor Jennifer Doyle. Queer Lab's mission is to foreground UCR as the UC's most progressive campus for LGBIT Studies. Queer Lab supports not only individual research, but interaction between all members of the UCR community interested in learning more about sexualities studies.
