Again during Winter Quarter 2009 the division of Student Affairs will be partnering with the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences in intervening with a group of first year students who have encountered academic difficulty during their first quarter at the University through HASS 001 -" College Success for Freshmen" . The courseis a 2 unit course that is structured with a one hour lecture, and a one hour discussion facilitated by student affairs professionals from the college and the division of student affairs. The course is designed to introduce first year students to a range of information and experiences to assist them in becoming successful and active members of the UCR community. Geoff Cohen is the CHASS faculty member who will be coordinating the course.
In addition to attending lecture and workshop sessions, students are also required to do 2 reflection papers, an individualized plan and a final critical analysis where the students reflect on where they started the quarter, what they learned, and what they would like to do in the future by utilizing the information presented to them to analyze their own academic and social experiences. Students will also attend events on campus that are presented by University departments or services. Our assessment of the course has been very promising and indicates that the course makes a positivedifference in students' success and retention. Enrollment in the class is expected to be about 100 students. We hope to identify four staff members from the division of student affairs who are willing to serve as co-facilitators of a workshop of 25 students with an academic advisor from CHASS. The anticipated time commitment will be fall quarter training and preparation, and approximately 6 to 7 hours per week during the winter quarter associated with preparation, grading and student consultation and attendance at the lectures and workshops.

The fall quarter training will is scheduled 3:00pm - 5:00pm in HMNSS 1609 on the following dates: December 2, December 4, December 9, and December 11.

To be qualified to serve as a workshop leader you must have completed an advanced degree program which included attention to student development theory or completed the Student Development Scholars Program offered in AY 2004-05. Workshop leaders receive a modest stipend. Thank you for your consideration of this request. If you are interested and available to serve as a discussion leader please let me know by the end of next week, Friday November 21 if possible.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like additional information
