Did you know?
-Suicide is the number two killer of college students between the ages of
15-24 (accidents are number one)
-More 15-24 year-olds die from suicide than from cancer, AIDs, heart
disease, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung
disease combined
-The overall college student suicide rate is about half the national suicide
rate for a sample matched by age, gender, and race

You can be a Lifesaver at UCR!
Various resources are always available at UC Riverside. During the week of
January 22nd-January 25th 2008 we will be highlighting a few of these
resources.
The following programs will be offered by the Counseling Center, R.E.A.C.H.
Peer Educators and Golden Arches Peer Educators:
How to be a Lifesaver at UC Riverside: A workshop for staff, faculty, and
students interested in learning more about suicide and resources available
at UC Riverside. We are offering the same workshop twice, with the hopes
that one will match your schedule!
Wednesday, January 23rd, 12-1:00pm, Commons 367 & Thursday, January 24th,
3-4pm, Costo 1/2
The Truth about Suicide: A showing of "The Truth about Suicide" and a
post-movie discussion with resources provided. This program is part of the
"First Year Success Series," but all are welcomed to attend.
Tuesday, January 22nd, 2-:3:30pm, Commons 379
Additionally throughout the week:
-Suicide awareness display on the Commons Construction Fence
-Suicide awareness office display contest
-Various suicide awareness books available in the Campus Store
-Resource packets available in the AVC/Dean of Students Office and various
study lounges
-Informational tabling at the Bell Tower
Does your office wish to compete in the suicide awareness display contest?
During the week of January 22nd-25th 2008 student and staff judges will
visit offices to judge suicide awareness displays based off the following
criteria:
1) Quality of resources provided
2) Creativity
3) Relevance of materials to UC Riverside students

Winners will receive: An office pizza party, a half page newspaper ad
highlighting the winners and various suicide awareness pens, note-pads, and
posters.
If interested in providing suicide awareness resources to UC Riverside
students and competing in the office display contest please contact Jen
Miller at Jennifer.miller at ucr.edu or (951) 827-5000 to sign up by Friday,
January 18th, 2008.
