On Behalf of Dr. Wallace Cleaves, Director of the University Writing
Program:

Welcome to UC Riverside! We are looking forward to your joining the campus
community. This message is about steps you need to take to satisfy the *UC
Entry-Level Writing Requirement (ELWR)* in a timely manner. First, you need
to review the ways you could, or may have already satisfied the ELWR*.* It
must be satisfied no later than the end of your freshman year, and
preferably by the end of your first quarter. Check the list below to see
whether you have already satisfied that requirement by at least one of the
following methods:

   - 30 or better on the ACT, English Language Arts; or
   - 63 or better on the ACT, English + Reading
   - 680 or better on the SAT, Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing; or

*Please note: The digital SAT Reading and Writing section score
has not been approved to meet the ELWR. *

   - 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in
English (Language or Literature) or Seminar; or
   - 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement assessment in
   Research
   - 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A:
   Literature exam
   - 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A:
   Literature
   - 5 or above on an International Baccalaureate Higher Level English A:
   Language and Literature exam; or
   - 6 or above on an International Baccalaureate Standard Level English A:
   Language and Literature exam; or
   - The requirement can also be met by earning a grade of C or higher in a
transferable English or Writing composition course offered by a college or
   university.

If you have not satisfied the requirement by one of these methods (our
current records indicate you have not yet done so), you should sign up to
complete the *Writing Placement Process (WPP) *diagnostic essay exam. The
WPP will be administered online through Canvas, UCR’s learning management
system.

Our recommendation: complete the test as soon as possible. There are
several opportunities to complete the WPP in August:

            August 2nd – 10am or 5pm

            August 3rd – 10am or 5pm

            August 30th – 10am or 5pm

            August 31st – 10am or 5pm

All students who have not satisfied the ELWR, must complete the WPP in
order to enroll in the appropriate writing course at UCR. Students who
complete the WPP in August will receive the results with sufficient time to
enroll in a writing course before Fall quarter instruction begins.

The Entry-Level Writing Requirement and the WPP diagnostic essay exam have
nothing to do with admission to UCR. We are writing to you *because* you
have already been admitted. What you need to do now is begin to make plans
to satisfy the UCR Entry-Level Writing requirement as soon as possible.

Please do the following:

   - Visit https://uwp.ucr.edu/elwr#wpp for more information about the exam.
   - *Register for the exam *here
   <https://ucriverside.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bmHmwXKuwbrzuEm>*. *
   - Students requesting accommodations for the exam should contact
   <https://sdrc.ucr.edu/incoming-admitted-students-disabilities> the
Student Disability Resource Center at least 2 weeks before the test date.

We wish you success at UCR. General information about the Entry-Level
Writing Requirement and the Writing Placement Process can be found on our
website at: https://uwp.ucr.edu/elwr.

If you have further questions, please contact the University Writing
Program at uwp at ucr.edu. Our goal is to help you succeed at UCR.
