Uncommon Emergency: A Roundtable on the Invasion of Ukraine, Border Violence, War, and (Un)Shared Suffering

The UCR Center for Ideas and Society (CIS) cordially invites UCR retirees and emeriti to their virtual event on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. titled, "Uncommon Emergency: A Roundtable on the Invasion of Ukraine, Border Violence, War, and (Un)Shared Suffering". How does Russia's invasion of Ukraine create and exacerbate uneven, disparate, and even incomparable suffering for different communities and people in the region? What does the contemporary global history of border militarism, criminalization and policing teach us about the complex, differential casualties created by this current crisis? How are queer, Black/African, racialized migrant/refugee and other populations experiencing these conditions of war, displacement and gendered state violence?

Roundtable discussion with SA Smythe (African American Studies, UCLA), Harsha Walia (Activist, Writer) and Chelsi West Ohueri (Slavic and Eurasian Studies, U Texas-Austin).
