To ensure compliance with Group Insurance Regulations (GIR), it's important that each employee's separation whether through layoff or retirement is recorded accurately in UCPath.  The way their benefits are processed depends on the action and reason selected.


  *   If an employee is marked as "Layoff," their benefits will end in the month the layoff occurs.
  *   If "Retirement" is selected as Payroll Status (even if separating due to Layoff), they receive an extra month of coverage, as allowed under GIR.  Central HR Benefits can confirm retirement status.  Contact benefits at ucr.edu.
  *   If "Retirement" cannot be used in the system for any reason:
     *   Locations may submit a case with documentation showing the employee is actively taking steps to retire (please confirm with Central HR Benefits first at benefits at ucr.edu).  With this, the additional month of coverage may still be granted.
     *   If no documentation is submitted, we are required to follow the GIR rules as written for layoff.  Not doing so is a policy violation.

When a reason other than "Retirement" is used in UCPath, proof is required when requesting the extra month of coverage for retirement.
