Dear AAS Members,
Our apologies for adding another message to your in-boxes, but we wanted to notify everyone that the deadline for next spring’s AAS dissertation workshop “Politics of Environment” has been extended to January 7, 2009. The workshop is scheduled for March 29-April 1, and will immediately follow the AAS annual meeting in Chicago.
All across Asia, the politics of the environment has become a subject of research, debate, and activism. Social scientists, natural scientists, historians, philosophers, novelists, film makers, government agencies, NGOs, local communities, etc., are in various ways are addressing issues of access to, depletion of, and control over land, forests, water, waterways, dams, and maritime resources. Many are focusing on the conflicts between “traditional” rights of indigenous populations as they engage with new forms of state regulation, the creation of national parks and nature preserves, as well as commercial, residential, and touristic development. Others are concerned with questions of environmental justice in the face of increasingly stratified and neo-liberal states, and the ecological and human costs of so-called modernization. Still others are exploring the forms, meanings, and possibilities of community based resource management, sustainable development, and green governance. Understandings of "the commons" as well as historically gendered access to and utilization of land in the context of population growth, industrialization, and urbanization are now deeply contested issues.
This workshop is intended to bring together doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences who are (1) developing dissertation proposals or are in early phases of research or dissertation writing; and who are (2) also dealing with the kinds of issues mentioned above in the context of contemporary or historic Asian states and societies. Participants will be provided meals and hotel accommodations, as well as limited travel subsidies. For full details regarding eligibility, application procedures, etc., please refer to the announcement on the AAS website (www.aasianst.org).
We ask everyone to please bring the workshop to the attention of graduate students, and also to consider serving as faculty participants if the theme or subject areas are of particular interest. Regarding the latter possibility, please feel free to contact workshop organizer David Szanton (szanton at berkeley.edu).
Many thanks and best wishes for the holidays.
Michael Paschal
Executive Director
