   .

Colleagues,

Information Technology Solutions (ITS) has been hard at work upgrading the
campus virtual private network (VPN)
<https://insideucr.ucr.edu/scotmemos/2025/09/04/coming-soon-new-virtual-private-network-vpn-service>
from the old Palo Alto (GlobalProtect) to the new Cisco Secure
(AnyConnect). For those who manage their own devices, the new VPN is now
available for download from vpn.ucr.edu (see guidance
<https://ucrsupport.service-now.com/ucr_portal?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0011142>).
Those who use devices managed by university IT can expect to see the new
client appear on their device within the next few weeks.
Windows and Mac Users
Self-managed Device

Highlanders who manage their own Windows or Mac device are welcome to
download the new Cisco Secure VPN (see guidance
<https://ucrsupport.service-now.com/ucr_portal?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0011142#_yb8gz1guz5wr>
).

University-managed Device

Highlanders who use university-managed devices (including departments that
are part of Secured Device Services
<https://ucrsupport.service-now.com/ucr_portal?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0012086>)
will see the new Cisco Secure VPN on their device over the course of the
next few weeks. Once you see the client on your device, you can find guidance
on how to use it in the ITS Knowledge Base
<https://ucrsupport.service-now.com/ucr_portal?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0011142>.
In the meantime, you may continue using the Palo Alto VPN on your Windows
or Mac device.

The old Palo Alto VPN will continue to work on Windows and Mac devices
until it is sunset by ITS. This date and process will be shared with campus
in a future communication, so please keep an eye out for information.
Other Operating Systems

As a result of this transition, Highlanders who use the VPN with devices
that have Linux, Chrome, Android, or iOS operating systems (i.e., Linux
machines, Chromebooks, phones, or tablets) will be required to use the new
VPN as of Monday, October 27, 2025, as the old VPN will no longer be
accessible via these operating systems. Learn more
