Assistant/Associate Professor of Science Fiction Film Studies About Us

LMC’s film studies curriculum includes introduction to film, film history,
film and/as technology, major filmmakers, global cinema, experimental film
and media, documentary, and animation. The minor in film studies is one of
the most popular on campus. Our science fiction studies curriculum includes
science fiction literature, science fiction film and television,
Afrofuturism, environmentalism and ecocriticism, and a variety of courses
on science, technology and ideology/race/gender/postcolonialism. The School
has a 17,000-item science fiction collection, a Sci Fi Lab, and also offers
a science fiction minor. Both film and science fiction studies regularly
host events connecting members of the Georgia Tech community with their
popular counterparts. Atlanta is home to a vibrant film community including
Trilith Studios, Tyler Perry Studios, and the Atlanta Film Festival. It is
also a local, national, and global center for major science fiction events
including DragonCon and the Atlanta Sci Fi Film Festival.

Department Information

The School of Literature, Media, and Communication is a multi-disciplinary
program. It offers B.S. degrees in Literature, Media, and Communication and
in Computational Media, M.S. degrees in Digital Media, Human Computer
Interaction, and Global Media and Cultures, as well as a Ph.D. in Digital
Media. The School includes the Writing and Communication Program, the
Brittain Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, the Institute’s Communication
Center, and provides discipline-specific courses and communication support

Job Summary

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong program of
research commensurate with work at a major research university. They should
have experience in and a commitment to teaching both introductory and
advanced film and science-fiction courses. The typical teaching load is
2/2. There are also opportunities to teach graduate courses in our Digital
Media and Global Media and Cultures programs, and to engage in program
building with LMC scholars working at the intersections of science fiction
and film while pursuing individual research and development of new courses.
Required Qualifications

A Ph.D in film studies or a related field and a research focus on science
fiction film and media.
Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with research expertise in Black Media, social justice, and/or
environmental humanities are particularly encouraged to apply.
