The Department of Humanities, Faculty of Liberal Arts &
Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates
to apply for a professorial stream *tenure-track appointment in
Environmental Humanities at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July
1, 2022*. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The Humanities major brings interdisciplinary and
cross-cultural perspectives to questions of historical and contemporary
significance. It is seeking an appointment in Environmental Humanities to
address a primary cultural, intellectual and environmental challenge facing
the contemporary world. Humanistic perspectives on environmental
issues are fundamental to reframing our relationships and responsibilities
to the natural world in this time of rapid change. The deepening
present environmental and social crises are entangled with the ways in
which diverse human cultures have made themselves at home in the
natural world. The radical alterations of the world in which we live as a
result of climate change and other anthropogenic factors require us to
rethink many of the concepts and practices that have been central to
the understandings and aspirations of (post)colonial cultures.
The perspectives of land-based cultures, such as local and global
Indigenous peoples, may provide some alternative models for relationships
between humans, other life forms, and the land itself.

The Department of Humanities is seeking highly qualified candidates with a
PhD or PhD by July 1, 2022 in Environmental Humanities or a related degree;
Humanities-based methods should be centred in the candidate’s research. We
are interested in candidates whose work critically engages
current environmental issues from perspectives that complement and extend
existing faculty strengths including interdisciplinary animal studies,
Indigenous studies, equity studies, history of science and technology,
philosophies of nature and the anthropocene, as well as digital and
acoustic culture. Candidates should be able to teach across disciplines and
across cultural and medial forms.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in
outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research at
the highest level.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of
research excellence of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated
in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming
publications) with significant journals in the field; presentations at
major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from
referees of high standing.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as
undergraduate teaching, and the successful candidate must be suitable for
prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will
be provided by: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments
and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such
as experiential education and technology enhanced learning;
teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.

York is a leading international teaching and research university, and a
driving force for positive change. Empowered by a welcoming and diverse
community with a uniquely global perspective, we are preparing our students
for their long-term careers and personal success. Together, we can make
things right for our communities, our planet and our future.
