Dear all,
High Summer is almost upon us — this Mediterranean Greek is enjoying the heat, I must say — and, of course, I'm sending you all good energy and fortitude to get through finals!
Some awesome things are happening in Special Collections and Archives, and I'll start with news you might have seen already:
*
Our newest exhibit, Neon in the Gutters: Cyberpunk Visions of the Future, is officially open! Expectedly curated by processing archivist Andrew Lippert and with a stunning wall installation by our conservator Christina Bean, this chronological leap through the history of cyberpunk comics and graphic novels is not to be missed. We're on the 4th floor of the Rivera Library, and you can visit us Monday through Friday, 10am-4pm.
*
Relatedly, we have a reading section in the exhibit room featuring a small collection of deaccessioned, duplicate comic materials which you can come and read in-person and even take if you wish!
New acquisitions include:
*
Karl Hans Strobl and Alfons von Czibulka, eds., Der Orchideengarten (1919-1921). This is the full run of 51 issues of a scarce, early, and important magazine that John Clute in the SFE notes as likely "the first specialized fantasy magazine in the world". It contains numerous luminaries including Hoffmann, Wells, Capek and Conan Doyle, and is finely illustrated throughout. I'm SO excited to add this title to our exhaustive collection of SFF periodicals.
*
Four boxes of translated works of Greg Bear, including signed and limited editions.
Finally, next month, Special Collections Public Services, Outreach & Community Engagement Librarian Sandy Enriquez and I will be tabling at the IE Zine Festival on June 29th, 1pm-4pm at The Cheech, so do come say hi, check out some zines, and pick up some nerd realness swag.
Stay cool!
Warmth and light,
Phoenix

We at UCR would like to respectfully acknowledge and recognize our responsibility to the original and current caretakers of this land, water, and air: the Cahuilla, Tongva, Luiseño, and Serrano peoples and all of their ancestors and descendants, past, present, and future. Today this meeting place is home to many Indigenous peoples from all over the world, including UCR faculty, students, and staff, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these homelands.
