Dear all,

We made it!

I hope finals/work/other commitments have wrapped up, or are in the process of wrapping up, nicely, and that a relaxing holiday beckons.

It's been an eventful year, for sure, and I want to start this last Klein update of 2023 by reminding everyone (myself included!) to allow yourselves kindness and rest as we go into 2024.

Speaking of which: look out for the new SCUA exhibit, titled 'Eaton at the Movies!', opening January 29th! It showcases items related to SF film and television from the Eaton Collection, and I found some gems in our unprocessed collections in particular, which I can't wait for you to see.

The Eaton Collection has continued to grow, with some super-exciting additions:

  *
John Coker's 'Portraits of Wonder': an archive of 200 matted and signed photographs of prominent science fiction authors from the early 1980s-2000s. These wonderfully complement the Klein photographs and papers, and continue the chronological documentation of the SF world, post-Klein. The Klein and Coker archives combined present a vast and comprehensive visual history of 20th-century fandom.

  * Jane Webb Loudon, The Mummy!, 1828. A rare second edition of an early, important work of SF by a female author.

  *
C. L. Moore, Judgement Night, 1952. A beautiful first edition from another major female author in SF.

  * Stanislaw Lem, Solaris, 1971. The UK first edition of this classic SF novel, featuring a gorgeous, illustrated dust jacket.

In other news:

  * Andrew Lippert has completed cataloging of the Klein Papers! Check out the finding aid at this link<https://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/c8bv7nq5/entire_text/>; the Klein photographs are also in the process of being digitized.

  * Thanks to everyone who submitted their artwork and written pieces to Sandy Enriquez's 'Ancestral Futures' project! It was a pleasure going through each submission, and Sandy will compile a zine featuring the selected work in the new year, so do look out for that.

That's all for now! Take good care of yourselves, have a great holiday break, and wishing you all the best for the new year.

Warmth and light,

Phoenix

We at UCR would like to respectfully acknowledge and recognize our responsibility to the original and current caretakers of this land, water, and air: the Cahuilla, Tongva, Luiseño, and Serrano peoples and all of their ancestors and descendants, past, present, and future. Today this meeting place is home to many Indigenous peoples from all over the world, including UCR faculty, students, and staff, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these homelands.
