Hi Prof. Carrington,

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, here’s the main story I was working
on, which we broadened a bit to include recent comments from a WarnerMedia
exec about Zack Snyder fans.

Hi Prof. Carrington,

I hope you are well. I wanted to update you on the story. I am still
working on a larger story about Krystina and inclusion in Star Wars fandom,
but with the firing of Gina Carano last week, we are also doing a separate
story looking at the issues surrounding her firing.

The story itself will focus on industry insiders discussing how the firing
happened an why, but one of the points you made when we spoke really stuck
with me — and I think would be helpful context to include in this story (in
addition to the Krysitna story, later on).

It’d look something like this…

*Industry observers note that for companies such as Lucasfilm, taking a
public stance against offensive behavior sends a signal to both employees
and to fans from marginalized backgrounds that they are valued. *

*"You need an inclusive and welcoming tone set from the top," says andre
carrington, author of Speculative Blackness: The Future of Race in Science
Fiction and Associate Professor of English at the University of California,
Riverside.*

I wanted to see if that seems true to the spirit of your thinking,

Thanks,

Aaron

Hi Prof. Carrington,

My name is Aaron and I’m an editor at *The Hollywood Reporter*, an
entertainment publication based in Los Angeles. I’m working on a story for
our magazine looking at issues of racism and bullying within Star Wars fan
culture, and came across your book, *Speculative Blackness*, and thought
you might be able to offer a historical perspective to the times we are
living through now.

Would you be available for a short phone call in the next week or two to
lend your expertise?

The story will look at bullying within *Star Wars* fandom, and how
companies such as Disney and Lucasfilm can help curb it. This follows the
racist bullying of host Krystina Arielle:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-55782460. Lucasfilm spoke out
against the bullying, yet remained silent in previous years when actors
such as John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran faced similar racist vitriol.

The goal with my story is to look at what is happening, and also offer
suggestions for how things can improve by speaking to scholars and members
of the entertainment industry.

Thanks,

Aaron
