Hello SEHE friends,
See this important call for action from SEHE faculty Juliann Allison:

The 2001 "Roadless Rule" protects ~58 million acres of undeveloped
national forestlands across 39 states from new road construction,
commercial logging, and industrial mining. The original regulation received
more than 1.6 million comments, more than any other federal rule in U.S.
history. Now, the USDA has initiated the process of revoking the Roadless
Rule, and shifting management decisions to local and state forest
leadership. Research by the Sierra Club, the Nature Conservancy, Columbia
Law School, PLOS and others suggests that this shift will not sustain
current protections, but rather increase wildfire risk and ecological harm
by opening protected wildlands to development and extraction.

99% of the more than 183,000 comments received during the initial review
period oppose the proposed rescinding the Rule. *The public comment period
has been extended through October 6. *

More than Just Parks created a "Roadless Comment Writing Tool" to assist
with crafting a personalized, evidence-based comment that references
specific scientific information and/or legal or policy issues. Government
agencies are required to respond to such comments. Check it out!

(Note
that the AI tool will produce a draft comment; however, it can be used
instead just to quickly identify areas near where you live or recreate that
would be affected, and provide summary, scientific and legal information
about key concerns.

Thank you for considering submitting a comment.
