Dear UCR postdoctoral fellows: <>
I am reaching out about the upcoming visit (May 21-22, 2025) of Dr. Beronda Montgomery. Dr. Montgomery is the 2025 ARA Faculty Mentoring Program’s Distinguished Speaker. Dr. Montgomery is an award-winning leader in mentoring, academic leadership, and equity, diversity and inclusion, as well as being a prominent biochemist. Her contributions to mentorship have strongly influenced the development of the ARA Faculty Mentoring Program within CNAS. I provide a short synopsis of Dr. Montgomery’s accomplishments at the end of this email and links to recent publications in the attached document.
Given the School of Education’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, I would like to provide two opportunities for postdoctoral fellows to engage with Dr. Montgomery.
Postdocs are invited to attend Dr. Montgomery’s talk and light reception. (open to the campus) May 21, 2025
Dr.Montgomery’s seminar is entitled: Envisioning our future: How to enhance a culture of mentoring and equity. How universities acknowledge faculty mentoring faculty efforts.
Wednesday May 21, 2025 3:30-4:30 PM School of Medicine 104
Light reception will follow the seminar (SOM 2nd floor Terrace)
Please register at this LINK <https://forms.gle/ySKcZ8HP4eihp93q8> prior to May 11 (midnight) using your UCR net ID email. We need to know if you:
intend to attend Dr. Montgomery's seminar in person
would like a zoom link to her seminar, and/or
will attend the light reception that follows the seminar. The registration helps us gauge the food order.
We would like to invite 10 postdoctoral fellows to meet with Dr. Montgomery to talk about issues of mentoring, academic leadership and equity and inclusion. Email lwalling at ucr.edu <mailto:lwalling at ucr.edu> if you are interested in meeting in-person with Dr. Montgomery.
The meeting time and date has yet to be determined (as I have several times/dates pending confirmation). I should establish a day/time by early next week.
We will provide snacks, baked goods, coffee, tea and cold water.
If you are interested, please email Linda Walling (Director, ARA Program) at lwalling at ucr.edu <mailto:lwalling at ucr.edu>.
This is rare opportunity to interact with a leader in mentoring, academic leadership and DEI. I hope there will be a sufficient number of postdocs interested in this interaction.
All the best,
Linda Walling
A brief introduction to Beronda Montgomery.
Dr. Beronda Montgomery is a leader in mentoring, academic leadership, and equity, diversity and inclusion, as well as being a prominent plant biochemist. She is currently the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Dean of Grinnell College. Dr. Montgomery’s perspectives on mentoring and leadership have helped form the foundations of the ARA Faculty Mentoring Program within CNAS. Dr. Montgomery is a plant biochemist, writer, and scholar who focuses on how individuals perceive, respond to, and are impacted by the environments in which they exist; this theme unites her research with her efforts for systemic change in mentoring and leadership. Her 2021 book Lessons from Plants creatively joins the principles of plant responses and adaptations to their environments with best practices for mentoring and creating an equitable, diverse and inclusive university environment. <>
Dr. Montgomery sports a wide variety of awards. Three of her most recent awards are:
2025 recipient of a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) (Jan 13, 2025).
2024 recipient of the Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award from the American Society of Plant Biologists.
2022 recipient of the Adolph E. Gude Award from the American Society of Plant Biologists in recognition of outstanding service to the science of plant biology.
