Dear Colleagues,

I hope your fall quarter is off to a great start! I wanted to share some
news and updates about the Social Sciences Lab and upcoming events.

First, I want to thank Jieun Lee for being such an amazing Lab Manager last
year. Jieun has a two-quarter dissertation fellowship, so will step aside
from this role, and I am delighted to introduce you to Aysenur Kesap, who
will be the Lab Manager for this academic year.

Second, I want to thank those who have agreed to serve on the advisory
committee for the lab for 2026-2027: Michael Bates (Economics), Jimmy
Calanchini (Psychology), Kim Yi Dionne (Political Science), Juliann Emmons
Allison (Society, Environment, and Health Equity), Jennifer Gaudette
(School of Public Policy), Anthony Jerry (Anthropology and Black Study),
Bruce Link (School of Public Policy and Sociology), Robert Perez (Ethnic
Studies), and Jennifer Syvertsen (Anthropology).

The physical space for the lab has been patched and painted, some of the
computers for the lab have arrived, and we have a plan for the layout of
the space. However, we are still waiting on a permit to purchase furniture,
so we may not be able to open the physical space until later in fall or
early winter quarter. As a reminder, the lab will be housed in Sproul Hall,
Rooms 2218 and 2228. I am happy to give tours of the space if anyone would
like to see it before the furniture arrives!

*Call for Presenters (Winter and Spring Quarter)*
We are currently building our schedule for next quarter and spring quarter!
If you are a faculty member interested in presenting your research at a
future lunch talk, please get in touch with us! We would love to provide a
venue for you to share your work in a supportive multidisciplinary
environment.

*Office Hours (Fall 2026)*

Director, Jennifer Merolla | Mon 3:30-4:30 and by appointment | Watkins 2222

Lab manager, Aysenur Kesap | Tue 1-2, Thu 12-2 | Watkins 2121A

During Aysenur’s office hours, you can get assistance with Qualtrics survey
design (programming common question types, setting up basic randomization
and survey flow), getting started with R (importing datasets, basic data
structures, descriptive statistics, and R Markdown), IRB submissions
through Kuali (navigating the system, conducting research outside the US),
and LLM-assisted text classification (prompt writing and setting up simple
workflows).

Stay tuned for more details on individual events soon! I look forward to
seeing you later this quarter.

Best,

Jenn Merolla
