Hi all,

Just to quickly follow up on our discussion about H1B visas and green 
cards on Thursday.  First, the H1B visa - from what I gather, the 
$100,000 fee does not apply to students who are already in the US on a 
student visa.  However, it might be a concern if you were to do a 
postdoc abroad and wanted to come - then, presumably, your application 
would be for a new visa, rather than a change of visa status (which is 
supposed to be exempt). At any rate, it is something to keep in mind 
should you find yourself in that position.

For the green card, it doesn't sound like the requirement that you leave 
the country while you wait for your green card is real. It sounds like 
it was just (intentionally?) bad communication. Apparently, the DHS can 
make you leave while you wait, but they have always been able to do so, 
only in exceptional circumstances:
