Dear colleagues,

This email is my notification to you about the requirements of the University
of California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (
<https://policy.ucop.edu/doc/2500489/NAGPRA>NAGPRA) Policy
<https://policy.ucop.edu/doc/2500489/NAGPRA> and our responsibility to
report any previously unreported potentially NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA-eligible
Human Remains or Native American Objects that: 1) Are under UC’s Control
(including any remains or cultural items UC may have loaned to other
institutions or individuals), or 2) Are on loan to the UC or any of our
faculty, staff, and students.

If the answer to any of the following questions is "yes", please let me
know by Friday:

   1. Are there any human remains or ethnographic or archaeological objects
held by you in department/unit offices or laboratories that may be Native
   American?
   2. Are there any human remains or ethnographic or archaeological objects
on loan to another institution or individual that may be Native American?
   3. Are there any human remains or archaeological or ethnographic objects
in your home that were acquired through University of California research
   that may be Native American?
   4. Are there any medical specimens without a deed of gift or documents
of origin? These may be Native American and thus subject to
   NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA.
   5. Do you hold any human remains that are unidentified or have not been
seen by a human osteologist that may be Native American?
   6. Are there any human remains in your possession that are thought not
   to be Native American?

Thanks,
Kevin

Dear Deans, Department Chairs, and Unit Heads,

This message serves as the annual communication to raise awareness about
the requirements of the University of California Native American Graves
Protection and Repatriation Act (
<https://policy.ucop.edu/doc/2500489/NAGPRA>NAGPRA) Policy
<https://policy.ucop.edu/doc/2500489/NAGPRA>. Under this policy, we are
required to conduct a systematic review to locate any previously unreported
Native American Human Remains and Cultural Items (see Section V. E). The
Policy is intended to ensure that each UC campus is in full compliance with
the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (
CalNAGPRA) as amended on September 27, 2020 (California Health & Safety
Code (CHSC) §§ 8010-30). The amendment went into effect on January 1, 2021
and requires that the University of California create and maintain a
comprehensive inventory of all Native American human remains and cultural
objects held by each campus. Further, CalNAGPRA requires that summaries
include all Native American ethnographic or archaeological objects (“Native
American Objects”).

To that end, all Deans, Department Chairs, and Unit Heads are requested to
complete the online survey
<https://ucriverside.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_82MjwWUvlsNBV0W> by
1/15/2026 (Thur) in consultation with your faculty, staff, and students as
appropriate. A list of the survey questions is attached for your
convenience. If your department has already completed the survey, your
department does not need to fill the survey out again. Please see the
attached for the survey response status.

UCR Repatriation Coordinator Megan Murphy (megan.murphy at ucr.edu) will
review and identify items and departments/units that may require further
assessment. Please reach out to her with any questions.

We appreciate your attention and cooperation.

Sincerely,
S. Jack Hu, Chancellor

Mihoko Hosoi, University Librarian & Chancellor’s Designee for NAGPRA
