Heads,</font></p><p><font face="tahoma, sans-serif">This message serves as the annual communication to raise awareness about the requirements of the <a href="https://policy.ucop.edu/doc/2500489/NAGPRA" target="_blank">University of California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (</a><a href="https://policy.ucop.edu/doc/2500489/NAGPRA" target="_blank"><span><span>NAGPRA</span></span>) Policy</a>. Under this policy, we are required to conduct a systematic review to locate any previously unreported Native American Human Remains and Cultural Items (see Section V. E). The Policy is intended to ensure that each UC campus is in full compliance with the California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (<span><span>CalNAGPRA</span></span>) as amended on September 27, 2020 (California Health & Safety Code (CHSC) §§ 8010-30). The amendment went into effect on January 1, 2021 and requires that the University of California create and maintain a comprehensive inventory of all Native American human remains and cultural objects held by each campus. Further, <span><span>CalNAGPRA</span></span> requires that summaries include all Native American ethnographic or archaeological objects (“Native American Objects”).</font></p><p><span style="font-family:tahoma,sans-serif">To that end, all Deans, Department Chairs, and Unit Heads are requested to complete the </span><a href="https://ucriverside.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_82MjwWUvlsNBV0W" style="font-family:tahoma,sans-serif" target="_blank">online survey</a><span style="font-family:tahoma,sans-serif"> by 1/15/2026 (Thur) in consultation with your faculty, staff, and students as appropriate. A list of the survey questions is attached for your convenience. If your department has already completed the survey, your department does not need to fill the survey out again.
