Subject: Call for Stone PhD Student Visitor Applications
To: HKS-inequality <inequality at hks.harvard.edu>
Dear Directors of Graduate Studies and Graduate Program Coordinators, we
would be grateful if you could please share the following announcement with
PhD students in your department:
----
*Call for Stone PhD Student Visitor Applications*
Harvard Kennedy School’s Stone Program in Wealth Distribution, Inequality,
and Social Policy seeks to forge connections between its affiliates and PhD
students at other institutions. To promote this aim, the program is
launching a Stone PhD Student Visitor
<https://inequality.hks.harvard.edu/stone-phd-student-visitors> initiative.
Through this initiative, doctoral students in the social sciences at other
universities will spend one to two days in residence at HKS. They will meet
with faculty and students, attend a seminar, and share a group meal. Recent
seminar speakers include economists Susan Athey, Raj Chetty, and Katy
Milkman, political scientists Vincent Hutchings, Paul Pierson, and James
Robinson, and sociologists Monica Bell, David Grusky, and Cecilia Menjívar;
further information is available at
https://inequality.hks.harvard.edu/seminar-archive. The purpose of this
initiative is to promote intellectual exchange, identify possible research
synergies and new collaborators, and generate conversations across
disciplines and institutions.
*Resources*
The Stone Program will provide accommodations and cover travel and meal
expenses for visiting students. Students at institutions in the Boston area
will not receive accommodations, students at institutions in Massachusetts
but outside the Boston area or in states bordering Massachusetts will
receive accommodations for one night, and students at institutions in all
other U.S. states will receive accommodations for two nights.
*Eligibility*
Non-Harvard PhD students in the social sciences (especially, but not
limited to, economics, political science, and sociology) who study topics
related to inequality, wealth distribution, and social policy are
encouraged to apply. Applicants must be currently enrolled at a PhD program
at a university in the United States.
*How to Apply*
Applicants should send (1) their CV, (2) a 1-page description of their
motivation for participating in this initiative, and (3) a list of Mondays
during the 2025-2026 academic year when the applicant is *not* available to
visit HKS; all visits will take place on Mondays. These three documents
must be combined into a single PDF document and emailed to
inequality at hks.harvard.edu. Applications will be considered on a rolling
basis.
