Dear all,
We have compiled a set of documents with information on the job market in political science. We encourage all students to check it, even if you are not on the market this year. If you are planning to be on the job market next year, reading the documents can help you to start planning ahead of time when the time comes. Please read them carefully.
- [[https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-sopGjOx5ggUaOAB1MsDnuKPXqcjo2L9?usp=drive_link][Google folder]]: This folder contains examples of applications (kindly shared by colleagues), templates, a quick guide with Q&A, a handbook, and a timeline document. We have compiled valuable information for you to navigate the job market. The templates include files in LaTeX and .docx. The templates and examples should help you prepare a professional-looking application material in terms of both format and content. The guides will provide valuable tips for various aspects of the process, and we have compiled the Q&A based on previous questions from students and our own knowledge of the process.
/For those on the market this year/:
- Check the timeline document and make sure you are on schedule. You should have all materials for your application ready, as recommended in the timeline (no need to despair if not; just start working on it as soon as you can. )
- You need to send us (Indridi and me) ASAP:
- A 'student highlights' for us to distribute to faculty :: We will put your information on the UCR website (see [[https://politicalscience.ucr.edu/hire-ucr-phd][here]]) and mention you to faculty from other universities that are hiring talented graduate students whenever that opportunity arises (e.g., in conversations during APSA and other conferences we attend). However, we can only do so if we know the details of what you do and how remarkable your research is. So, send to us:
* field(s)
* Brief Research Bio (A short text with ~200 words explaining what you study, , the methods you use, etc., like those you see on Faculty profiles on department websites)
* dissertation title
* dissertation abstract
* Advisor
* Job market paper title
* Job market paper abstract
* Publications
* Website address
- Your cover letter :: We will share it with some faculty and provide feedback to you.
- Job talk :: We are going to organize job talks to provide you with feedback as well. Please let us know the closest date that you will be ready for the job talk. For example, if you think you will be prepared for a practice job talk on August 10th, kindly send us that date. We will decide on the schedule based on this information. It is very likely that the talks will be scheduled for later, during the Fall quarter.
Finally, we will organize a second informal meeting with Q&A to discuss the job market. Everyone can attend. It will be via Zoom, and we will send the date later. But _make sure you read all the material in the Google Drive folder before coming to the meeting._ You don't want to waste time discussing things we already covered in the material that is available to you in that folder. It is better to see what is there and what /is not there but you wish it was/, so that we can discuss and include whatever is missing later.
If you have any questions, please let us know.
Best regards,\\
Diogo and Indridi
