Department Graduate Student Research Award

Deadline: May 27, 2022 at 5 pm

The Department is accepting proposals for research support awards of up to $1500. Students should prepare a 1-to-2 page proposal describing their project, how the funds would be beneficial to their research, and how the funds would be spent. The funds must be used to facilitate aspects of research that may include: travel to field sites or archives, purchasing data or other materials, hiring research assistance, copying, mailing, or other reasonable research expenses. Students should submit their proposal, along with a budget sheet, as well as a timeline for the expenditure of the funds. Funds will be expended and reported per university guidelines.

NOTE: Political theory students should note that non-empirical research is also eligible to be funded. Students who do purely theoretical work can be exempted from the requirements of submitting budgets and timelines if there is no travel, archival or other material expenditure involved. In this case, theory students should focus their proposal on the significance, novelty and contribution of their project to their own career advancement, and to furthering research on important issues.

We encourage students to read the attached guidelines when preparing their proposals for review

Please note that California State Law (Government Code Section 11139.8, enacted pursuant to AB 1887), effective January 1, 2017, prohibits state-funded travel to a state that has passed a law after June 26, 2015 that (1) authorizes discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, or (2) voids or repeals existing state or local protections against such discrimination. For more information on travel restrictions relating to this law, please see http://accounting.ucr.edu/docs/travel/faq-ab-1887-requirements-201706.pdf <http://accounting.ucr.edu/docs/travel/faq-ab-1887-requirements-201706.pdf>

Only students who have passed comprehensive exams are eligible for these funds. The Department is particularly interested in supporting dissertation research. The Graduate Committee will select award winners.

Students are required to submit a one-page summary describing the results of their funding within thirty days of the completion date listed on their timeline. Failure to do so will make them ineligible for discretionary department funding (e.g., conference travel).

Please submit applications electronically to Gary Kuzas at gary.kuzas at ucr.edu, no later than May 27, 2022, by 5 pm.

 best,

Farah
