Hi grad student physicists and astronomers,

If you are an international student planning to work on campus in the Fall
but are unable to enter the US by the beginning of the Fall quarter
<https://registrar.ucr.edu/calendar#first_day_of_class> on Sept. 20, you
may request to teach remotely temporarily until your arrival. You should
email your department no later than two weeks before the start of your
appointment to request that you be temporarily allowed to work from abroad.

Additionally, International workers unable to return to the US for the
entirety of the fall quarter due to travel restrictions or visa delay may
request remote teaching assignments for the Fall quarter. You can read the
official guidelines issued by UCOP here
<https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/special-announcements/faq-re-acad-appointees-teleworking-from-overseas.pdf>.
Use the procedures outlined here
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1d8j4AWVYnzaRCH18UxG0xqek94E1NcLXpqPuxuftfHY/edit>
to request these accommodations.

If you are disabled and need to request to teach remotely in the Fall
quarter, Article 23 in our contract
<https://uaw2865.org/know-your-rights/contract/> guarantees that the
University has to provide you with a reasonable accommodation that is
acceptable to both parties through the interactive process. You should
contact your supervisor and SDRC <https://sdrc.ucr.edu/#remote-faq> to
request accommodations, including the ability to work remotely.

Campus union representatives had a meeting with UCR Labor Relation to
discuss the teleworking guidance last week. The University’s responses to
our questions are listed here
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d7mcJIj6deCCBy5oRnzA-i4eXVWoRhic/view?usp=sharing>.
One point that needs to be highlighted is the department needs to work
together with Grad Division to accommodate international students with
travel/visa difficulties and pay them, even if the department does not
offer virtual courses for the Fall quarter. We also advise you to cc
Patrick Napier (patrick.napier at ucr.edu) when you make a remote working
request to the department in case the department does not report your case
to the Grad Division.

If you have any questions and concerns, or if you have requested remote
work accommodation that has been denied, please get in touch with us at
riverside at uaw2865.org.

Solidarity,

Ming-Feng Ho
