Apologies for the delay in announcing the attached call for a fellowship. Please read the eligibility criteria carefully and let me and Derek know if you qualify. It is a prestigious award and I strongly encourage anybody who qualifies to contact us immediately. 

GUIDELINES FOR UC PRESIDENT'S PRE-PROFESSORIATE FELLOWS (HSI) AWARDS

This program’s goal is to enhance faculty pathways for historically underrepresented groups, particularly Latinx, African Americans, American Indians/Native Americans, Filipinx, and Pacific Islanders in all disciplines; women in STEM; and Asian Americans in the humanities and social sciences. The intent of the program is to provide fellowships for domestic historically underrepresented minorities from California HSIs. For purposes of this fellowship, AB540 students are eligible. International students are not eligible for this fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria

Must be a Ph.D. student. 
Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States (AB540 status is ok).
Must be exceptional students (as demonstrated by their research achievements).
Must have received their undergraduate or master's degree from a California Hispanic Serving Institution (CA HSI) - public or private.
Must have advanced to candidacy prior to being selected for the fellowship.
Must have letters of support from Faculty Advisor (s) that address the student's performance and potential as an exceptional academic, and comment on the likelihood that the student will pursue a professoriate path after receiving their Ph.D.
Must have demonstrated record of advancing issues of inclusion, equity, and diversity; actively supporting underrepresented communities; and shows commitment to pursuing these efforts throughout their career.
Must be actively engaged in scholarly research leading to the dissertation.
Must not have more than 7 units of incomplete grades.
Must be making acceptable progress toward the degree. (For these purposes, acceptable progress for a Ph.D. student means advanced to candidacy within 15 quarters after entry and must complete the degree by the normative time to degree for the particular program plus 1 year at time of degree.
Can be on leave to apply but must be enrolled as a full-time student (12 units) during tenure of fellowship.
Fellows will receive a $30,000 stipend for one academic year and a$10,000 grant for professional development support to be used throughout their Ph.D.

Application Procedure

The applicant must follow the graduate program’s instructions for deadlines to complete the application form, including the research statement. Two letters of recommendation from faculty are required for each nominated application; one letter must be from the dissertation adviser. Programs will submit final applications from nominees no later than January 31, 2022.

Support Summary

$7,200 stipend per quarter (Summer '22, Fall ’23, Winter ’23, Spring ’23) up to three quarters, plus fees (fees applicable FWS only). Employment supplementation is not allowable during the quarters of the award.

Some awards are funded through UCOP monies available only to domestic students who meet diversity criteria. Thus, all domestic students need to complete the diversity form so Graduate Division can determine an appropriate funding source for each awardee. A diversity statement is require to be considered for the award.
