Dear Physics & Astronomy grad students, postdocs and other researchers,

This is a reminder that we will be hosting an alumni panel on Thursday, May 27th at 5 pm. The Zoom link is: https://ucr.zoom.us/j/92180343326 <https://ucr.zoom.us/j/92180343326>.

The panelists will first give short talks describing the path that their careers took since getting their Ph.D. from UCR, discussing choices they had made and why they made certain decisions. The purpose is to aid you in making choices about your own future careers. After their presentations, the floor will be open to questions, so please be prepared with whatever you would like to ask them about.

The panelists are:

Varoujan Chakarian - Research advisor: Jory Yarmoff. He received his Ph.D. in 1993 and his first position was as a postdoc for the Naval Research Laboratory studying magnetic thin films and multilayers. Afterwards, he moved to Silicon Valley and was a systems engineer and architect for the R&D teams of a number of Semiconductor Capital Equipment companies holding increasingly senior management roles. The companies include Etec, Applied Materials, KLA, Solyndra and Nanosolar. He recently retired.

Kyle Hiner - Research advisor: Gaby Canalizo. He completed his degree in 2012 and is currently a Data Science Manager at Capital One in McLean, VA. His first position was as a policy analyst on the California Senate Energy, Utilities, and Communications Committee. He then joined the Universidad de Concepción, Chile as an astrophysics postdoc. In 2015, Dr. Hiner transitioned to a career in data science, first working for Adlucent, LLC in Austin, TX.

Mariana Lazarova - Research advisor: Gaby Canalizo. She graduated from UCR in 2012 and is currently an Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Northern Colorado. Before starting this tenure track position, she had visiting faculty positions at Pomona College, Colorado College, and the University of Nebraska. She is an Hispanic 1st generation college student.

Astrid Morreale - Research advisor: Ken Barish. She received her Ph.D. in 2009 and earned an international NSF fellowship in France, followed by a University of Jyvaskyla postdoc at CERN, and then took a non-tenure track faculty position at the Ecole de Mines de Nantes in France. She is now a senior Staff Physicist at Los Alamos National Lab. She is also a veteran of the US Marine Corps.

I hope that you enjoy and learn from the panel.
