Ascend, Pilot Learning Program Launched Spring 2024
“Ascend is “a data-driven professional learning program that enables college instructors and administrators to learn how their students are experiencing courses and what they can do to make those experiences more equitable, more engaging, and more supportive of student success.” (PERTS website<https://click.mailchimp.com/track/click/30010842/www.perts.net?p=eyJzIjoiRmZNWHlnNXBDajJJdExUWGpuTGFyTHNhZXQ4IiwidiI6MSwicCI6IntcInVcIjozMDAxMDg0MixcInZcIjoxLFwidXJsXCI6XCJodHRwczpcXFwvXFxcL3d3dy5wZXJ0cy5uZXRcXFwvYXNjZW5kXCIsXCJpZFwiOlwiMDJkNmE0NjY3ZmU4NGEyNzk3NjU4ZjkzYjYwOGIxODNcIixcInVybF9pZHNcIjpbXCJlZjQ1MzllZTkyOWJmZjZjZWFlZjU3YTQ0YmU1ZjA0NDg2OTdmM2Q0XCJdfSJ9>). It was developed by the company PERTS in partnership with the Student Experience Project<https://click.mailchimp.com/track/click/30010842/studentexperienceproject.org?p=eyJzIjoiWXdYQVFhUXZCRDBoZHFjcjJ1eC1hbklDd0VjIiwidiI6MSwicCI6IntcInVcIjozMDAxMDg0MixcInZcIjoxLFwidXJsXCI6XCJodHRwczpcXFwvXFxcL3N0dWRlbnRleHBlcmllbmNlcHJvamVjdC5vcmdcXFwvcmVzb3VyY2VzXFxcL1wiLFwiaWRcIjpcIjAyZDZhNDY2N2ZlODRhMjc5NzY1OGY5M2I2MDhiMTgzXCIsXCJ1cmxfaWRzXCI6W1wiYWI1OGFiNjRlZGI5NTBmYzg5NjU5MzZjZWU4ZDU0OGY1YWFiNDFlMFwiXX0ifQ> (SEP), a collaborative of stakeholders in higher education committed to using data-driven methods to improve student outcomes through building equitable and supportive learning environments.
The SEP collaborative is a partner of XCITE, and it is through them that we have Premium access to Ascend. Ascend includes a survey instrument, which is ideally deployed three times in an academic term to provide real-time feedback to instructors about their students’ experiences in their courses in order to improve student experiences within courses. The survey assesses seven aspects of the student experience, dubbed “Learning Conditions.” Once surveys are deployed, instructors may view disaggregated data of their students’ responses, filtered by demographics to identify equity gaps, and are provided just-in-time intervention suggestions to improve each Learning Condition.
Nine faculty participants deployed the Ascend survey to 12 courses in Spring 2024, impacting an estimated 1294 students. Community Reports that reflect the results of the surveys across all courses, show promising results.
By the end of the Spring ‘24 quarter, the pilot cohort showed an increase in positively rated responses across every learning condition except “Trust & Fairness” (which started at a 94% positive response rate). Across all three surveys, the pilot cohort demonstrated an increase of five percentage points in the “Belonging Certainty” learning condition, which is even more promising when disaggregated by race and gender.
We hope that the benefits and impact of the Ascend Pilot will be to:
* Further the community of inclusion, belonging and respect between faculty & students
* Provide faculty with validation for inclusive teaching practices
* Gain data on the effectiveness of the Ascend survey for decreasing equity gaps in the UCR student population
* Enhance the course experiences of undergraduate students at UCR
XCITE is seeking to expand the pilot in coming terms.

Peter Carney, a physics major and Prestigious Scholarship award recipient said, “There are many staff that have been very helpful to me, but Mrs. Gladis Herrera-Berkowitz has been significantly influential in my life. I was first introduced to her via zoom when I was applying for the Goldwater scholarship. As a prestigious scholar advisor / writing instructor, she took a lot of time to help me craft my essays and portray the content of my life's story in a meaningful way. Not only did I win the Goldwater scholarship, she then suggested other fellowships to me AND helped me apply for graduate schools. Not only did I get accepted to every graduate school and fellowship I applied to, but thanks to her, my writing has significantly improved, which will serve me well for the rest of my life. Additionally, she's given me key points of mentoring when making tough decisions. She is truly wonderful and I am very grateful to have connected with her.”
In 2023-2024 the prestigious scholarship team of Gladis Herrera-Berkowitz and Jennifer Kavetsky helped UCR students win over $300,000 in scholarships.
15 R'Courses To Be Taught Fall 2024
Forty-four (44) R’Courses were offered in AY 2023-24 with an enrollment of 700 students. Topics range from “Disneyland Imagineer” to “Unlocking the Basics of Coding in R.” R’Courses allow undergraduate students in any discipline to propose and teach a unique course. To lead an R’Course, students first develop and propose a course topic with mentorship from a faculty member and CUREL staff. The proposal is reviewed by a committee of faculty appointed by the Academic Senate. If approved, students enroll in EDUC 102 where they learn pedagogy and the basics of Democratic Education. Students begin teaching their R’Courses the following quarter and can teach up to 6 times. Up to 20 students can enroll in an R’Course.
In Fall 2024, 15 R’Courses will be taught:

UCDC Student Honored with Certificate of Appreciation
Anjulina Lay, a senior business administration student and co-president of the UCR Khmer Student Society, recently participated in UCDC Summer 2024 where she interned with the Royal Embassy of Cambodia. According to her supervisor Usaphea Horn, Second Secretary of Chief Consular Affairs, “The student’s most meaningful achievement was crafting a proposal to establish a sister relationship between Tbong Khmum Province and Minnesota. Her work on this initiative demonstrated her ability to bridge international connections and showed a deep understanding of the importance of fostering global partnerships.”
For her hard work and dedication to the embassy, Anjulina received a Certificate of Appreciation from Khmer Ambassador Keo Chhea. Her UCDC experience has fueled her passion for foreign service, and she hopes to inspire her student club members to follow in her steps.
“...it was an incredibly rewarding and enjoyable summer. Participating in the UCDC program was an invaluable experience, and I am so grateful for your support and guidance throughout this journey.”

Esperanza Scholar’s Project
This Fall, the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) is piloting a project involving the DUE, The Academic Resource Center, The University Writing Program, and the Center for Undergraduate Research and Engaged Learning (CUREL).
For context, essentially all first year UCR students take the writing entrance exam (AWPE) and UCR tends to have a significant percentage of first year students who test into English 4 (the course before English 1A). In an effort to pilot some additional support for a subset of the English 4 student population, we are launching the Esperanza Scholar’s Project working with three UWP lecturers with four sections each. Each section has approximately 20 students, which equates to approximately 180 Esperanza Scholars during the fall quarter. Each Esperanza Scholar will have access to the following:
* English 4 course and their instructor (UWP)
* An assigned peer mentor through the CUREL Campus Collective program (CUREL)
* Access to various forms of tutoring, workshops, and additional support (ARC)
* Access to other academic opportunities available in the Ethnic and Gender Centers, Career Center, other CUREL programs, etc.
As a way to structure and monitor student engagement, we created a series of incentives and a one-page tool to monitor student engagement—two best practices shared by the ARC. The Esperanza Scholar’s Project aims to boost graduation rates, reduce equity gaps, and increase participation in high impact practices—three of the DUE’s strategic goals.
